María José Martínez Sánchez (born August 12, 1982 in Yecla ) is a former Spanish tennis player .
Career
Martínez Sánchez started playing tennis at the age of six. She has been a professional since 1996 and has been on the WTA Tour since 1998 . According to the ITF, she prefers hard courts, although she has won her first nine doubles and four singles titles in clay court tournaments.
In 2008 Martínez Sánchez competed for the Spanish team at the Olympic Games in Beijing .
In her first attempt to reach the main draw in a Grand Slam tournament , she failed in the second qualifying round of the 2000 US Open . In the individual, she has won five WTA tournaments so far, including the 2010 clay court classic in Rome, her most important title so far.
In 2012 she also took part in the London Olympics for Spain.
In doubles, she was already in fourth place in the WTA world rankings (July 5, 2010). She has already won 17 WTA titles, eleven of them alongside her compatriot Nuria Llagostera Vives . From June 2013 she took a longer break on the women's tour. Since March 2015, it has almost only taken part in double competitions.
The doubles specialist competed in the German tennis Bundesliga for the TC Blau-Weiss Bocholt until 2012 .
On December 22, 2019, she announced the end of her career on Instagram.
Personal
María José Martínez Sánchez is the only daughter of Ricardo and Fini; she has two younger brothers, Ricardo and Alejandro.
