Important: The sporting events are recorded in separate sections for the respective sports.
The XXI. The Winter Olympics were held in the Canadian city of Vancouver from February 12th to February 28th. Vancouver was awarded the contract in 2003 when the city on the Pacific Ocean prevailed against Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Salzburg (Austria). There were 86 decisions in 7 sports, with indoor sports in Vancouver and outdoor sports in Whistler , about a two-hour drive away . Whistler had already applied to host the 1968 Winter Olympics .
On February 12, the opening ceremony took place in front of around 55,000 spectators in the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, which mainly dealt with the history of the Canadian indigenous peoples . Hayley Wickenheiser took the Olympic oath, and Wayne Gretzky , Nancy Greene , Steve Nash and Catriona LeMay Doan lit the Olympic flame together. The celebrations were overshadowed by the death of Georgian tobogganist Nodar Kumaritashvili , who had a serious accident during the final training session on the controversial competition track in Whistler. As a result, some changes were made to the track.
Host Canada was able to achieve first place in the medal table with 14 gold medals won . Canada (14-7-5) is ahead of Germany (10-13-7) and the USA (9-15-13). The USA won the most medals, namely 37. Norway, South Korea and Switzerland follow in fourth to sixth place. Four years before their home games in Sochi, Russia was only able to take eleventh place in the medal table (3-5-7). The former Nordic skiing power, Finland, did not receive a gold medal , just like at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin .
On February 28th , the XXI. Olympic Winter Games declared over during the closing ceremony by IOC President Jacques Rogge . The closing ceremony was accompanied by performances by numerous artists (including William Shatner , Michael J. Fox , Catherine O'Hara , Michael Bublé , Neil Young , Nickelback , Simple Plan , Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette ). Sochi's mayor, Anatoly Pachomov, accepted the Olympic flag as the representative of the next venue .

The game went into overtime with no more goals until a Ghanaian header was blocked by Uruguay's striker Luis Suárez with a hand on the line in the 120th minute . Asamoah Gyan took the penalty and missed, bringing the game to penalties, which Uruguay won 4-2. The third quarter-finals between the Argentinians, trained by Diego Maradona , and Germany should be a small moment in Germany. After the German 4-1 victory over England, Germany won the game against Argentina after goals from Thomas Müller , Miroslav Klose , Arne Friedrich and again Klose 4-0. Spain beat Paraguay 1-0. David Villa scored in the 83rd minute. Previously, both teams had missed the chance to take a 1-0 lead with a penalty.

Maximiliano Pereira scored the next goal in stoppage time, but the defeat of the Uruguayans, trained by Óscar Tabárez , could not be averted. The second semi-final in Durban between Spain and Germany showed the Spanish team to be superior over long stretches and finally scored 1-0 through Carles Puyol .

A header from Sami Khedira (82nd) finally sealed the German success.
The final in Johannesburg turned out to be a tough game, especially on the Dutch side. Defender Johnny Heitinga had to leave the field after 109 minutes after a yellow-red card, further serious fouls by Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong were not punished by the English referee Howard Webb . Andrés Iniesta finally secured Spain the first ever football world title with his 1-0 winning goal four minutes before the end of extra time.

Especially the Finnish team disappointed compared to the previous season. Despite the return of Janne Ahonens , the performances of the Finnish jumpers were fluctuating. Ahonen, who surprisingly finished second in the 2009/10 Four Hills Tournament won by Andreas Kofler and once again reached fourth place at the Olympics, was eleventh in the overall World Cup, while his team-mate Harri Olli 14th, who once again had extra-sporting escapades this season drew attention.
The Slovenian Robert Kranjec secured the ski flying ranking ahead of Schlierenzauer and Ammann.
A rule change was successfully tested in several competitions in 2009/10: In order to ensure more fairness due to different wind conditions, the points were calculated using a mathematical formula. This calculation method can also be used to change the start-up within a competition. The feared opacity for viewers due to the complicated procedure for calculating the points turned out to be problem-free. In the Nordic Combined, the procedure had already been adopted for all competitions in 2009/10.
- December 29, 2009 to January 6 - The 58th Four Hills Tournament will be held. The defending champion was the Austrian Wolfgang Loitzl . Overall World Cup leader before the Swiss Simon Ammann tour . The first competition in Oberstdorf was won by the Austrian Andreas Kofler with almost 12 points ahead of the Finn Janne Ahonen . Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria, who had only finished ninth in Oberstdorf, now won the competitions in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck. However, Kofler was able to defend his lead with two fourth places. Before the last competition, Andreas Kofler was 14.6 points ahead of Schlierenzauer. In Bischofshofen, Andreas Kofler finally reached a 5th place to win the Four Hills Tournament. The Bischofshofen competition was won by his team mate Thomas Morgenstern ahead of Ahonen, who finished second in the overall tour standings behind Kofler, 13.3 points behind. With that, Ahonen had finally settled into the top of the World Cup after his one-year break. Defending champion Wolfgang Loitzl was third to tour ahead of Schlierenzauer and Ammann. Five Austrians were among the top ten in the overall tour ranking.
- February 13th - Simon Ammann becomes Olympic champion on the normal hill. In both rounds he set the furthest mark with 105.0 and 108.0 meters respectively and won the gold medal in front of 32-year-old Poland Adam Małysz and Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer . Janne Ahonen (Finland), Michael Uhrmann (Germany) and Robert Kranjec (Slovenia) came in fourth to sixth . For Simon Ammann it is the third gold at the Olympics after his two surprising individual victories at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
- February 20 - Simon Ammann also wins the gold medal on the large hill. As on the normal hill, Adam Małysz and the Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer win silver and bronze. Simon Ammann wins his fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games (all individually), for Małysz it is already the third silver medal, and in 2002 he won bronze once. Matti Hautamäki from Finland, who was in third place after the first run, jumped the worst of all the athletes who started there in the second run and lost around 20 places. His compatriot Janne Ahonen was injured in training and only started for the first round, which he finished in 16th place. Ahonen did not start in the team competition two days later either.
- February 22nd - The Austrian ski jumping team with the athletes Wolfgang Loitzl , Andreas Kofler , Thomas Morgenstern and Gregor Schlierenzauer win the Olympic team jumping as expected. A small surprise is that the German team won the silver medal with Michael Neumayer , Andreas Wank , Martin Schmitt and Michael Uhrmann . However, they are 72.1 points behind the Austrians. Bronze goes to Norway ( Anders Bardal , Tom Hilde , Johan Remen Evensen and Anders Jacobsen ).
- March 19 to March 21 - the end of the season takes place in the Slovenian Planica on the biggest jump in the world, the Letalnica , the FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 instead. The Swiss overall World Cup winner Simon Ammann wins after four rounds with 25.5 points ahead of defending champion Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria. Bronze goes to the Norwegian Anders Jacobsen . Austria can defend its 2008 title in team competition. Wolfgang Loitzl , Thomas Morgenstern , Martin Koch and Gregor Schlierenzauer win ahead of the Norwegian team, in which Anders Jacobsen, Anders Bardal , Johan Remen Evensen and world record holder Bjørn Einar Romøren jump. Third place goes to the Finnish team ( Janne Happonen , Olli Muotka , Matti Hautamäki and Harri Olli ).
