After the Olympic flame was lit at BC Place Stadium

The XXI. The Winter Olympics were held in the Canadian city of Vancouver from February 12th to February 28th. Vancouver was awarded the contract in 2003 when the city on the Pacific Ocean prevailed against Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Salzburg (Austria). There were 86 decisions in 7 sports, with indoor sports in Vancouver and outdoor sports in Whistler , about a two-hour drive away . Whistler had already applied to host the 1968 Winter Olympics .

On February 12, the opening ceremony took place in front of around 55,000 spectators in the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, which mainly dealt with the history of the Canadian indigenous peoples . Hayley Wickenheiser took the Olympic oath, and Wayne Gretzky , Nancy Greene , Steve Nash and Catriona LeMay Doan lit the Olympic flame together. The celebrations were overshadowed by the death of Georgian tobogganist Nodar Kumaritashvili , who had a serious accident during the final training session on the controversial competition track in Whistler. As a result, some changes were made to the track.

Host Canada was able to achieve first place in the medal table with 14 gold medals won . Canada (14-7-5) is ahead of Germany (10-13-7) and the USA (9-15-13). The USA won the most medals, namely 37. Norway, South Korea and Switzerland follow in fourth to sixth place. Four years before their home games in Sochi, Russia was only able to take eleventh place in the medal table (3-5-7). The former Nordic skiing power, Finland, did not receive a gold medal , just like at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin .

On February 28th , the XXI. Olympic Winter Games declared over during the closing ceremony by IOC President Jacques Rogge . The closing ceremony was accompanied by performances by numerous artists (including William Shatner , Michael J. Fox , Catherine O'Hara , Michael Bublé , Neil Young , Nickelback , Simple Plan , Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette ). Sochi's mayor, Anatoly Pachomov, accepted the Olympic flag as the representative of the next venue .

January 10th to January 31st - Angola is hosting the 27th African Championship . Two days before the start of the tournament, an attack was carried out on the team bus of the Togolese national team on the border between the Republic of Congo and the Angolan exclave Cabinda, in which the assistant coach, the press officer of the Togolese team and the bus driver were killed and several members of the delegation were seriously wounded. The Togolese Football Association decided on January 9th to bring its team back from Angola. The 2010 African Cup of Nations started with only 15 teams.

Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia qualify for the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals on January 28th, Ghana beat Nigeria 1-0. The 19th soccer world championship will be played in South Africa from June 11th to July 11th. 204 nations took part in the qualification for this tournament, in the end 32 made the qualification. The venues are Johannesburg (2 stadiums), Durban , Cape Town , Pretoria , Port Elizabeth , Nelspruit , Bloemfontein , Polokwane and Rustenburg . It is the first world championship to be held in Africa.

Preliminary round

With third place in Group A, South Africa was the first host to miss the next round. Uruguay surprisingly became unbeaten group winners ahead of Mexico. The runner-up in 2006, France, scored just one point against Uruguay and was eliminated from the bottom of the group.

In the Group B Argentina won all three games, but without superstar Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona scored a goal. South Korea also reached the round of 16 behind Argentina, while Greece and Nigeria fell by the wayside. After almost nine years, the term of office of the Greek trainer Otto Rehhagel , who led the Greeks to the European Championship title in 2004, came to an end. In Nigeria, the poor performance of the World Cup team had drastic consequences: Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ordered the dissolution of the Nigerian Football Association and the withdrawal of the Super Eagles from all tournaments for two years. However, after an ultimatum from FIFA, Jonathan withdrew the dissolution and suspension.

In Group C , the US Boys managed to become first in the table. The weak English team finished second. Slovenia and Algeria were eliminated.

A young German team reached the round of 16 after beating Ghana 1-0 in the last group game. Previously, Germany had lost 1-0 to Serbia in Group D. Germany and Ghana advanced, Australia and Serbia were among the 16 teams that did not reach the round of 16.

In Group E , the Netherlands won their group matches against Denmark, Japan and Cameroon and were group winners with nine points. Japan won the decisive game against Denmark 3-1 and finished second.

In Group F , Italy and Paraguay and New Zealand and Slovakia each started 1: 1. Paraguay won the second game against Slovakia while world champions Italy did not beat New Zealand 1: 1. In a dramatic match, Slovakia finally beat Italy 3-2 and reached the round of 16, as did Paraguay, who played 0-0 against New Zealand. New Zealand was thus eliminated undefeated, with three draws.

Brazil won Group G ahead of Portugal. Between two 0-0 draws against the Ivory Coast and Brazil, the Portuguese finished off the North Korean national team 7-0.

In Group H , Switzerland achieved a sensation with a 1-0 win over Spain at the beginning. However, Spain won the other two group matches and were group winners ahead of Chile. Honduras was bottom of the table with one point behind Switzerland.

Round of 16

South Korea lost 2-1 to Uruguay in their first game. The Ghana national team beat the United States 2-1 in extra time. In Bloemfontein Germany dealt with England 4-1. With a score of 2: 1 for Germany in the first half, the English were not awarded a regular goal - the ball jumped from the underside of the crossbar behind the goal line. In Germany they spoke of revenge for Wembley . Argentina beat Mexico 3-1 and reached the quarter-finals as did the Netherlands by beating Slovakia 2-1. One of the favorites for the World Cup title Brazil clearly beat Chile 3-0. The tournament's first penalty shootout was between Paraguay and Japan. After it was still 0-0 after extra time, the Paraguayan players won a thriller 5-3. Yūichi Komano missed the decisive penalty . The reigning European champions Spain won the last sixteen final between the neighbors Spain and Portugal 1-0.

Quarter finals

The Netherlands won the first game in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win against Brazil. Robinho had given Brazil an early lead. However, two hits by Wesley Sneijders meant the Netherlands would win. The game between Uruguay and Ghana came to a dramatic end. Sulley Muntari gave Ghana a 1-0 lead in added time in the first half. Diego Forlán equalized in the 55th minute. The game went into overtime with no more goals until a Ghanaian header was blocked by Uruguay's striker Luis Suárez with a hand on the line in the 120th minute . Asamoah Gyan took the penalty and missed, bringing the game to penalties, which Uruguay won 4-2. The third quarter-finals between the Argentinians, trained by Diego Maradona , and Germany should be a small moment in Germany. After the German 4-1 victory over England, Germany won the game against Argentina after goals from Thomas Müller , Miroslav Klose , Arne Friedrich and again Klose 4-0. Spain beat Paraguay 1-0. David Villa scored in the 83rd minute. Previously, both teams had missed the chance to take a 1-0 lead with a penalty.

Semifinals

The Dutch beat Uruguay 3-2. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's opening goal in the 18th minute was able to equalize Uruguay's Diego Forlán in the 41st minute. In the second half, however, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben increased to 3-1. Maximiliano Pereira scored the next goal in stoppage time, but the defeat of the Uruguayans, trained by Óscar Tabárez , could not be averted. The second semi-final in Durban between Spain and Germany showed the Spanish team to be superior over long stretches and finally scored 1-0 through Carles Puyol .

Game for 3rd place and final

In the game for the bronze medal, the German team, who started with some additional players such as substitute goalkeeper Hans Jörg Butt , defeated the Uruguayans 3-2. Thomas Müller's 1-0 after 19 minutes were able to turn the South Americans into their own advantage thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani (28th) and Forlàn (51st) before Marcell Jansen equalized five minutes later. A header from Sami Khedira (82nd) finally sealed the German success.

The final in Johannesburg turned out to be a tough game, especially on the Dutch side. Defender Johnny Heitinga had to leave the field after 109 minutes after a yellow-red card, further serious fouls by Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong were not punished by the English referee Howard Webb . Andrés Iniesta finally secured Spain the first ever football world title with his 1-0 winning goal four minutes before the end of extra time.

  • February 18 - As a result of the discussions on the introduction of a “Progressive List” (which was passed at the FEI General Assembly against the votes of the European equestrian federations), which would allow the use of phenylbutazone in equestrian sports again, was founded on February 18 2010 the European Equestrian Federation (EEF) as the European Equestrian Federation . The first president of the EEF is German Dr. Hanfried Haring. The “Progressive List” itself was not introduced as a result. He also won the World Cup final with Totilas .NetherlandsNetherlands
  • April 14th to April 18th - A few weeks after the World Cup final for dressage riders, the World Cup final for show jumpers was held in Le Grand-Saconnex near Geneva (Switzerland). The overall ranking of the Western European League in the 2009/2010 World Cup season was previously completed by Jessica Kürten from Ireland, who lives in Germany, as first place. After the first two special stages, McLain Ward was in the lead, but had disappeared from the rankings overnight. Even before the second special stage, Ward's horse Sapphire was diagnosed because of heightened sensitivity to pain, but the investigations continued into the second special stage. Therefore, Sapphire was only disqualified after the second test. Ward then called on all riders to boycott the third special stage, but they did not follow the call. In order to avoid a process, the World Equestrian Federation (FEI) agreed with Ward that the results of the first two special tests will be recognized due to procedural errors . However, McLain Ward's horse Sapphire remains disqualified for the third test and the overall standings . The victory in the World Cup final went to the Borkener rider Marcus Ehning with Nolte's kitchen girl and Plot Blue . The four-in-hand driver's World Cup final also took place during this event . Marit Bjørgen, most successful athlete in the cross-country skiing competitions in Whistler

Ski jumping

The ski jumping season 2009/10 ( see also: Ski Jumping World Cup 2009/2010 ) was dominated by the Swiss Simon Ammann and the Austrian team. The 28-year-old Swiss Ammann won nine individual competitions, including the last four of the Nordic Tournament , which it won confidently ahead of Adam Małysz from Poland, who gained strength in the second half of the season . The veteran from Poland had previously won the silver medal twice behind Ammann at the Olympic Games in Vancouver, both on the normal and on the large hill. For Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria, this year's overall World Cup runner-up and overall World Cup winner of the 2008/09 season, bronze remained. The Austrian team was outstanding in 2009/10. In addition to Schlierenzauer, Thomas Morgenstern (3rd), Andreas Kofler (4th), Wolfgang Loitzl (6th) and Martin Koch (8th) were among the top 10 in the overall World Cup.

In the national ranking, Austria relegated Norway to second place with 6868 points (3117 points). Germany and Finland followed in third and fourth place, Switzerland fifth, although apart from Ammann only Andreas Küttel reached a final for Switzerland. Especially the Finnish team disappointed compared to the previous season. Despite the return of Janne Ahonens , the performances of the Finnish jumpers were fluctuating. Ahonen, who surprisingly finished second in the 2009/10 Four Hills Tournament won by Andreas Kofler and once again reached fourth place at the Olympics, was eleventh in the overall World Cup, while his team-mate Harri Olli 14th, who once again had extra-sporting escapades this season drew attention.

The Slovenian Robert Kranjec secured the ski flying ranking ahead of Schlierenzauer and Ammann.

A rule change was successfully tested in several competitions in 2009/10: In order to ensure more fairness due to different wind conditions, the points were calculated using a mathematical formula. This calculation method can also be used to change the start-up within a competition. The feared opacity for viewers due to the complicated procedure for calculating the points turned out to be problem-free. In the Nordic Combined, the procedure had already been adopted for all competitions in 2009/10.

  • December 29, 2009 to January 6 - The 58th Four Hills Tournament will be held. The defending champion was the Austrian Wolfgang Loitzl . Overall World Cup leader before the Swiss Simon Ammann tour . The first competition in Oberstdorf was won by the Austrian Andreas Kofler with almost 12 points ahead of the Finn Janne Ahonen . Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria, who had only finished ninth in Oberstdorf, now won the competitions in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck. However, Kofler was able to defend his lead with two fourth places. Before the last competition, Andreas Kofler was 14.6 points ahead of Schlierenzauer. In Bischofshofen, Andreas Kofler finally reached a 5th place to win the Four Hills Tournament. The Bischofshofen competition was won by his team mate Thomas Morgenstern ahead of Ahonen, who finished second in the overall tour standings behind Kofler, 13.3 points behind. With that, Ahonen had finally settled into the top of the World Cup after his one-year break. Defending champion Wolfgang Loitzl was third to tour ahead of Schlierenzauer and Ammann. Five Austrians were among the top ten in the overall tour ranking.
