Lauren Woolstencroft (born November 24, 1981 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian alpine ski driver and multiple winner of Paralympic Games .

Career

Lauren Woolstencroft was born without the extremities below the knees and distal (below) the left elbow. Still, she started skiing at the age of four on a family vacation in Whitefish, Montana . She was accepted into the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team (CPAST) in 1998 after joining the Alberta Disabled Ski Team at the age of 14 and participating in her first competitions.

She starts with prostheses in the "standing" competition class. The 1.72 m and 56 kg athlete won numerous championships and titles in her career. Her results at Paralympic Games are outstanding. She was named "Athlete of the Year" in British Columbia in 2002 after her first participation in the 2002 Paralympics in Salt Lake City . There she won the gold medals in the Super-G and in the slalom, plus a bronze medal in the giant slalom. In this discipline she won in Turin in 2006 , but could not repeat the victory in the Super-G when she was second behind the French Solène Jambaqué . She finished the descent in fourth place. In Vancouver 2010 she was the outstanding athlete in the alpine disciplines with five gold medals in five starts. For the first time she won the downhill and also triumphed in the first super combination , plus first places in slalom, giant slalom and super-G in Whistler Creekside . This made her the most successful athlete at the Paralympics, alongside cross-country skier and biathlete Verena Bentele . This makes her one of the most successful athletes at Paralympics and one of a small group of athletes with a total of five victories in individual Paralympic Games.

In addition to her Paralympic successes, Woolstencroft won a total of eight world championships and numerous international competitions by 2010. In 2000, she achieved a triple victory in downhill, giant slalom and slalom in Sion , Switzerland , and in 2004 in Wildschönau she won the Super-G title. In 2007 she was IPC Athlete of the Year of the International Paralympic Committee . She was also Para-Alpine Athlete of the Year in 1999, 2002 and 2004 and Para-Alpine Female Athlete of the Year in 2006 . She is a multiple Canadian champion.

Woolstencroft studied electrical engineering at the University of Victoria , graduating in 2005 with a bachelor's degree and works for the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority . She lives in North Vancouver .
