Karel Rachůnek (born August 27, 1979 in Gottwaldov , Czechoslovakia ; † September 7, 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl , Russia ) was a Czech ice hockey player who played for the Ottawa Senators , New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League as well as Lokomotive Yaroslavl and HK Dynamo Moscow played in the Continental Hockey League .

Career

Karel Rachůnek began his career at HC Zlín , where he went through all the youth teams and for whom he played in the junior extra league between 1995 and 1997. During the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the ninth round in 229th place, but stayed with his home club until 1999. For this he made his debut during the 1997/98 season in the Czech extra league , but also came to 1st league appearances at HC Prostějov .

In 1999 he went to North America and from then on played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the International Hockey League . During the 1999/2000 season he also played his first six games in the National Hockey League for the Senators. Between 2000 and 2004 he was part of the regular squad of the NHL club from the Canadian capital, before he was handed over to the New York Rangers together with Alexandre Giroux , who in return sent Greg de Vries to the Senators.

During the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Rachůnek played for HC Znojemští Orli and Lokomotive Yaroslavl . In summer 2005 he decided to stay in Yaroslavl.

In the 2005/06 season he completed 66 main round and six playoff games for the New York Rangers in the NHL, before signing a contract with the New Jersey Devils in July 2007 . After a year with the Devils, he moved back to Russia in 2008, where he played for HK Dynamo Moscow in the Continental Hockey League until 2010 .

After Dynamo dissolved, Rachůnek moved back to Lokomotive Yaroslavl within the KHL. On September 7, 2011, Rachůnek died in a plane crash near Yaroslavl . The team was on their way to an away game in Minsk. The plane crashed half a kilometer after taking off. Of the 45 occupants, only one flight attendant survived.

International

Karel Rachůnek took part as a junior player in the U18 European Championship in 1997 and the U20 World Championship in 1999 . It wasn't until 2009 that he was nominated for the men's national team for the first time and played seven games at the 2009 World Cup .

In 2008 Karel Rachůnek took part in the Inline Hockey World Championship of the IIHF for the Czech Republic , where the national selection took sixth place.

After his death in September 2011, his jersey number 4 was banned from all national teams by the Czech Ice Hockey Federation .
