Petar Borota ( Serbian - Cyrillic Петар Борота ; born March 5, 1952 in Belgrade , † February 12, 2010 in Genoa ) was a Yugoslav football goalkeeper . Borota won the Yugoslav national championship with Partizan Belgrade in 1978 and from 1979 made over 100 appearances for Chelsea FC .
Career
Borota began his professional career at OFK Belgrade in 1969 and became the club's goalkeeper in 1972. After he missed the 1975/76 season because of his military service, he continued his career from 1976 at the top club Partizan Belgrade , with whom he won the national championship in 1978. During this time there were four missions in the Yugoslav national team . He made his debut as a substitute on October 5, 1977 against Hungary and played a month later in a 6-4 win in World Cup qualification against Romania, the only Yugoslav point win in qualifying. He completed his last international match almost a year later on October 25, 1978, when they met again in the European Championship qualifier against Romania and lost 3-2.
In March 1979, for a transfer fee of 70,000 pounds, he moved to English club Chelsea , where he replaced long-time goalkeeper Peter Bonetti . There, the extroverted goalkeeper quickly became a crowd-pleaser because of his spectacular excursions outside of the staf area and unusual parades. After Chelsea was relegated to the Second Division at the end of the 1978/79 season , Borota acted as the club's regular goalkeeper for the following two seasons and was voted Chelsea's Player of the Year by fans in 1981, after being 16- in the 1980/81 season. once remained without a goal. When his performances in the 1981/82 season increasingly fluctuated, he was replaced by coach John Neal in November 1981 by the only 17-year-old Steve Francis and left the club at the end of the season.
After a short stay at FC Brentford , he ended his career in Portugal at Portimonense SC , Boavista Porto and FC Porto . Borota died after a long illness at the age of 57 in Genoa, Italy .
