Dejan Zavec (born March 13, 1976 in Ptuj , Štajerska region ) is a former Slovenian professional boxer. By winning the IBF world welterweight title on December 11, 2009 against Isaac Hlatshwayo , he became the first Slovenian boxing world champion in history. After three successful title defenses, he lost his belt on September 3, 2011 to Andre Berto . In 2010 he was voted Slovenia's Sportsman of the Year as the only boxer to date .

On November 25, 2015, he boxed for the world title of the IBO and WBA in light middleweight, but lost to Erislandy Lara . After this fight, Zavec announced his retirement from boxing.

Since October 2010 he has been the owner of a training center named after him in Ptuj.

Amateur career

As an amateur, he played 205 fights, of which he won 171 and boxed 19 draws. He was Slovenian champion nine times and won several international tournaments, including the 10th international Chemnitz boxing tournament by winning the final against the Swiss Yves Studer . He was also a participant in the 1996 European Championships and the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Championships.

Professional career

Under the German promoter Sport Events Steinforth , he switched to the professional camp in March 2003 and was trained by Dirk Dzemski . He boxed mainly in Germany and became intercontinental champion of the WBO and IBF associations. On June 12, 2007, his fight against the Argentine Jorge Miranda ended without evaluation because Zavec was injured and the fight was ended on the advice of the ring doctor. In a rematch on June 19, 2009, he was able to defeat Miranda by knockout in round 12. In the fight for the European Championship he lost on November 29, 2008 just on points against Rafał Jackiewicz and thus suffered in his 27th professional fight, the first defeat.

On December 11th, 2009, Zavec surprisingly defeated the South African IBF title holder Isaac Hlatshwayo in his homeland Johannesburg by technical knockout in the third round and became Slovenia's first boxing world champion. Hlatshwayo won the vacant title against Delvin Rodriguez in August 2009 and had previously held the IBO title.

Zavec won his first title defense on April 9, 2010 in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana by technical knockout in the twelfth round against the Argentine Rodolfo Martínez, who was ranked 15th in the World Challenger List by the IBF. On September 4, 2010, he boxed in his second title defense in Ljubljana again against Rafał Jackiewicz , whom he was able to defeat this time by majority decision on points. With victories against Luciano Abis, Delvin Rodriguez and Turgay Uzun, the Pole had become a mandatory challenger. Zavec won his third title defense on February 18, 2011 in Ljubljana by knockout in the fifth round against the American Paul Delgado.

On September 3, 2011, he boxed in his fourth defense of his title in Biloxi , and thus for the first time in the United States , against Andre Berto, who was ranked third by Ring Magazine . In the powerful duel, Zavec suffered lacerations in both eyes, and his right eye swelled completely. This led to the fight being stopped in the break between the 5th and 6th round, with which Berto left the ring as the new world champion.

He played another fight in the US on March 9, 2013 at the New York Barclays Center as first-placed WBO challenger against Keith Thurman , but lost the fight unanimously on points.

On November 25, 2015, he played a world championship fight for the IBO and WBA titles against the Cuban Erislandy Lara in Hialeah, USA , but had no chance and lost by giving up in the third round. He then announced his retirement from competitive sports.
