Formula 1 season
The 2012 Formula 1 season was the 63rd FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It comprised 20 Grand Prix. It started on March 18th in Melbourne and ended on November 25th in Interlagos. The German Sebastian Vettel became driver world champion for the third time, the Red Bull-Renault team became constructors world champion.
World Rally Championship (WRC)
The 2012 World Rally Championship was the 40th FIA World Rally Championship. It started on January 17th in Monte Carlo and ended on November 11th in Catalonia. 13 races were held. The French Sébastien Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena won the world championship title for the ninth time in a row with the Citroën DS3 WRC .
Le Mans 24 hour race
The 80th 24-hour race of Le Mans took place on June 16 and 17, 2012 on the Circuit des 24 Heures . The winners Marcel Fässler , André Lotterer and Benoît Treluyer with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro .
IndyCar Series
The IndyCar Series 2012 was the 17th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 101st season in American monoposto sport. It began on March 25th in St. Petersburg and ended on September 15th in Fontana. Ryan Hunter-Reay won the IndyCar Series 2012. Dario Franchitti won this year's Indianapolis 500 .
Porsche Supercup
The 2012 Porsche Supercup was the 20th season of the Porsche Supercup. It comprised eleven races. The season started on April 21st in Bahrain and ended on September 9th in Monza. The German René Rast was champion in this series.

The highlights of the badminton year 2012 were the Olympic badminton tournament , the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup .

- The Miami Heat win their second NBA title
- The US team achieved a record 156-73 against Nigeria at the Summer Olympics in London . In this game, Carmelo Anthony posted 37 points in 14 minutes, which is also a record. In addition, Team USA beat the previous record with 29 three-point throws by 16.
- The USA became Olympic gold medalist , Spain came second and Russia came third . In the women’s category, the USA also won, the French women came second and Australia took third place .

- April 24th: The Eisbären Berlin win the final series of the DEL play-offs in their 5th game against Adler Mannheim and become champions for the sixth time. Motorcycle world championship
A total of 18 races were held between April 8th and November 11th . The 125 cc class, which had existed since 1949 , was replaced by the Moto3 class this season .
MotoGP class (800 cm³)
- World champion in the MotoGP class (800 cm³) is the Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha ahead of his compatriot Dani Pedrosa and the Australian Casey Stoner (both Honda ). For the 25-year-old Lorenzo, this is the first world title in the premier class and the fourth of his career. In the constructors' championship, Honda beats Yamaha and Ducati .
Moto2 class (600 cm³)
- In the Moto2 class, 19-year-old Spaniard Marc Márquez wins the title on Suter . Second was his compatriot Pol Espargaró on Kalex , and third was Italian Andrea Iannone ( Speed Up ). For Márquez this is the second world title of his career after he became the 2010 125 cc world champion. In the constructors' championship, Suter wins ahead of Kalex and Speed Up.
Moto3 class (250 cm³)
- The title in the Moto3 class, which was held for the first time, was won by the 22-year-old German Sandro Cortese on a KTM ahead of the Spaniards Luis Salom ( Kalex -KTM) and Maverick Viñales ( FTR - Honda ). For Cortese it is the first world title of his career. In the constructors' championship, KTM wins ahead of FTR-Honda and Kalex-KTM.
Superbike World Championship
- The 41-year-old Italian Max Biaggi wins the drivers' championship on an Aprilia RSV4 Factory ahead of the British Tom Sykes on a Kawasaki ZX-10R and his compatriot Marco Melandri ( BMW S1000 RR ). For Biaggi, who retires at the end of his career, this is the second title win in the Superbike World Championship and the sixth of his career. Aprilia beat BMW and Ducati in the constructors 'championship and wins his second constructors' title in this series.

World Supersport Championship
- The Turkish Kenan Sofuoğlu wins the drivers' championship on a Kawasaki ZX-6R ahead of the French Jules Cluzel and the British Sam Lowes (both Honda CBR600RR ). For the 28-year-old, this is the third Supersport World Championship title in his career. In the constructors' championship, Honda prevailed against Kawasaki and Triumph .

International German motorcycle championship
Isle of Man TT
- The 40-year-old Englishman John McGuinness won the Superbike and Superstock races on a Honda at the road races on the Isle of Man between June 2nd and 9th . New Zealander Bruce Anstey (Honda) wins in race A of the Supersport category , race B is won by Northern Irishman Michael Dunlop ( Yamaha ). In the lightweight class, 36-year-old Ryan Farquahr from Northern Ireland won the race on Kawasaki and the 40-year-old Englishman Michael Rutter on MotoCzysz won the TT Zero race . The senior race, the premier class at the TT, had to be postponed several times due to bad weather and ultimately canceled.
- In the sidecar class , the local duo Dave Molyneux / Patrick Farrance won both races in a DMR Honda. For the 48-year-old Molineux these are TT victories number 15 and 16 of his career.

- World Chess Championship 2012 from May 10th to 30th as a duel between Viswanathan Anand and Boris Gelfand : Anand defends his world title in the tiebreaker.
- In the Women's World Chess Championship 2012 in knockout format November 10 and December 2nd in Khanty-Mansiysk is Anna Ushenina new world chess champion. The previous world champion Hou Yifan was eliminated in the second round.
squash
- Ramy Ashour becomes world champion in Doha for the second time after 2008. In the final, he defeated his Egyptian compatriot Mohamed Elshorbagy with 2:11, 11: 6, 11: 5, 9:11 and 11: 8. With this triumph, Ashour moved back to the top of the world rankings in January 2013. Malaysian Nicol David defends her world title against Laura Massaro from England on Grand Cayman . With 11: 6, 11: 8 and 11: 6 David secured her seventh title.
- The Egyptian women's national team becomes world champion in Nîmes, France . It is also her second title after 2008. The team from England is runner-up, ahead of Malaysia and Australia.
- Olli Tuominen (Finland) and Camille Serme (France) each win their first European championship . Tuominen defeated his Spanish rival Borja Golán in front of a home crowd in Helsinki , Serme defeated defending champion Natalie Grinham .
- Simon Rösner wins the German championship for the sixth time. In the world rankings, he achieved 15th place this year, the best position of his career.
