biathlon
World cup
Both the men and the women began last year World Cup season ends on March 19 in the Norwegian Oslo . In the men's category, the French Martin Fourcade won the overall World Cup for the sixth time in a row . He also secured the individual, mass start, sprint and pursuit World Cup. Second place in the overall World Cup went to Anton Schipulin from Russia, ahead of the Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bø .
In the women's category, the German Laura Dahlmeier secured the overall World Cup for the first time in her career ahead of the Czech Gabriela Koukalová and Kaisa Mäkäräinen from Finland. In addition to the overall World Cup, Dahlmeier also secured the individual and pursuit World Cup, during which Koukalová won the sprint and mass start World Cup.
The national ranking was won by the German team for women and men, and the German team also won the relay world cup for women and the mixed relay world cup. In the men's category, the Russian team won the relay world cup.
The new World Cup season begins on November 27 in the Swedish Östersund .
World Championship
The 49th Biathlon World Championships were from 8 to 19 February at the Austrian Hochfilzen instead. With a total of seven gold medals and one silver medal, the German team was the most successful nation in these world championships, and the German team, Laura Dahlmeier, was the most successful athlete at the world championships. She won a medal in all of her six starts. Except in the sprint competition, where she won the silver medal behind Gabriela Koukalová , she won the gold medal in each of the competitions.
World Team Challenge
The 16th World Team Challenge took place on December 28, 2017 in the Veltins-Arena on Schalke in Gelsenkirchen . With Vanessa Hinz and Simon Schempp , two German athletes won the World Team Challenge. It was the fourth victory for Germany and it was equal to Norway's best nation to date .
Soccer
African Cup of Nations
The 31st African Football Championship was held from January 14th to February 5th . Of 52 applicants, 16 nations qualified for the competition organized by the CAF . This year's host was Gabon . The final took place on February 5th in the state capital Libreville , where Cameroon beat Egypt 2-1 . Cameroon won this competition for the fifth time. With the win they qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup in the summer.
FIFA Confederations Cup
The 10th FIFA Confederations Cup (officially the FIFA Confederations Cup ) begins on June 17th . The host Russia, world champions Germany and the six reigning winners of the continental championships are qualified for the competition organized by the world association FIFA . The final took place on July 2, 2017 in Saint Petersburg and the German national team defeated the favored Chileans 1-0 and won the Confederations Cup for Germany for the first time.
CONCACAF Gold Cup
The 24th CONCACAF Gold Cup draw took place between July 7th and 26th in the United States . In the opening game on July 7th, French Guiana and Canada faced each other and Canada prevailed 4-2. The fact that French Guiana had used former French international Florent Malouda in the game against Honduras caused a stir . The CONCACAF then rated the game with a 3-0 win for Honduras. On July 26, 2017, the final between the hosts from the United States and Jamaica was held in Santa Clara . With a 2-1 victory, the United States won the Gold Cup for the sixth time.
European Championship
The 12th European Women's Football Championship begins on July 16. Of 48 applicants, 16 nations qualified for the competition organized by UEFA . This year's host is the Netherlands . The final took place on August 6th in Enschede , which the hosts won after beating Denmark 4-2. While the German national team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Denmark, the national team from Austria was eliminated in the semifinals against Denmark. The Swiss national team was eliminated in the group stage.

Handball
World Championship (men)
The 25th men's handball world championship was held in France from January 11th to 29th . The World Cup was opened with the game France against Brazil . The final between France and Norway took place in Paris . Defending champions France won the game 33-26 and became world champions again. It was France's sixth world title overall.
The German national handball team , which were qualified as reigning European champions for the tournament, failed in the second round to Qatar . The Austrian national handball team failed in the play-off games against Serbia and did not qualify for the World Cup. The Swiss national team already failed in the qualifying group phase.
World Championship (women)
The 23rd women's handball world championship was held in Germany between December 1st and 17th, 2017 . The tournament opened with the game between Germany and Cameroon in Leipzig . In the final in Hamburg itself were France and the defending Norway against. The French decided the match with a 23:21 victory and thus secured their second world title. For the first time since 1982, the same country was able to win both the women's and men's handball world championships.
The German national team qualified as hosts and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Denmark . In the play-off games, the Austrian national handball team failed to Romania and did not qualify for the World Cup. The Swiss national team already failed in the qualifying group phase.
Nordic combination
World cup
The 34th edition of the Nordic Combined World Cup started on 26 November 2016 Finland Ruka and ended on March 19, 2017 German Schonach . The World Cup season was dominated by the German team. She won 22 competitions out of a total of 25 competitions and only missed a place on the podium in one competition.
During the season, the world cup leader's yellow jersey changed several times between Johannes Rydzek and Eric Frenzel . The decision about winning the overall World Cup was not made until the last race in Schonach. Before the race, four-time overall World Cup winner Eric Frenzel was in front of Johannes Rydzek. Although Johannes Rydzeck had a good starting position after jumping, he did not manage to change the yellow jersey again, but instead had to pay tribute to the long season and take a lot back. In contrast, Eric Frenzel was able to catch up on the trail and won the last race confidently ahead of Frenchman François Braud and Japanese Akito Watabe .
Thus Eric Frenzel won the overall World Cup ahead of Johannes Rydzek . Up until the last race, it looked like this was the first time that three athletes from the same nation would make the first three places in the overall World Cup. But thanks to Akito Watabe's third place and Fabian Rießle's 15th place , the Japanese managed to get third place in the overall standings. In the Nations Cup, Germany won easily ahead of Austria and Norway.
The 35th edition of the World Cup Nordic Combined starts on 24 November 2017 Finland Ruka and ends on March 25, 2018 German Schonach .
Nordic Combined Triple
The Nordic Combined Triple was in the World Cup 2016/17 for the fourth time in Austrian Seefeld in Tirol discharged. So far, the German Eric Frenzel has won all nine races of the Nordic Combined Triples and thus all three Nordic Combined Triples. This series was interrupted by Johannes Rydzek . He was able to win both the first and the second race ahead of Eric Frenzel. By winning the last race, Eric Frenzel was also able to win the fourth edition of the Nordic Combined Triple. The second place went to Johannes Rydzek and the third to the Austrian Bernhard Gruber .
Motorsport
formula 1
The 68th Formula 1 World Championship began on March 26 in Melbourne, Australia . Defending champion Nico Rosberg ended his career at the end of 2016, as did Jenson Button and Felipe Massa . The Finn Valtteri Bottas took the place of the second driver next to Lewis Hamilton in the reigning constructors' world champion Mercedes . With this change, Felipe Massa retired from the end of his career and started again for Williams F1 in Formula 1.
A total of 20 races are scheduled for this season. The German Grand Prix was again removed from the racing calendar after 2015. The season will end with the race on November 26th in Abu Dhabi .
DTM
The 31st season of the German Touring Car Masters began on May 5th at the Hockenheimring .
Motorcycle world championship
The 69th season of the Motorcycle World Championship, with the three classes MotoGP , Moto2 and Moto3 , began on March 26th in Qatar on the Losail International Circuit . After the planned 18 races, the season finale will take place in Valencia on November 12th .
Superbike World Championship
The 30th season of the Superbike World Championship in Australia began on February 25th at the Phillip Island Circuit . 13 events with two races each are planned. The season finale will take place on November 4th in Qatar at the Losail International Circuit.
Cycling
Giro d'Italia
The 100th Giro d'Italia took place from May 5th to 28th and consisted of a total of 21 stages over 3,609 kilometers. The German André Greipel wore the Maglia Rosa as the overall leader's jersey after his victory on the second stage for one stage. On the last stage, the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin got the Maglia Rosa from Nairo Quintana in Colombia. The points classification was decided by the Colombian Fernando Gaviria and the mountain classification by the Spaniard Mikel Landa . The best young rider was the Luxembourg Bob Jungels and the Movistar Team won the team championship.
Tour de France
The 104th Tour de France took place from July 1st to 23rd mainly in France , but also led through Belgium , Luxembourg and Germany , where it started in the North Rhine-Westphalian capital Düsseldorf . The tour consisted of 21 stages over a total of 3,516 kilometers. Chris Froome won the Tour de France for the third time in a row and for the fourth time. The points classification was Michael Matthews win from Australia and the mountain stage was won by Frenchman Warren Barguil . Bargiul was also named the most competitive driver . The best young driver was the Briton Simon Yates and Team Sky secured the team title .
Ski jumping
World cup
The women's ski jumping World Cup started on December 2nd, 2016 on Lysgårdsbakken in Lillehammer and ended on March 12th, 2017 on Holmenkollbakken in Oslo . The Japanese Sara Takanashi secured victory in the overall World Cup for the fourth time . In contrast to the previous season, however, she was no longer the absolute serial winner. She could win "only" nine out of 19 competitions. In addition to her, Yūki Itō , Maren Lundby and Katharina Althaus celebrated World Cup victories. In the team standings, Japan again prevailed over the German and Slovenian teams.
The men's ski jumping World Cup began on November 25th on the Rukatunturi ski jump in Kuusamo and ended on March 26th, 2017 on the Letalnica bratov Gorišek in Planica . The Austrian Stefan Kraft won the overall World Cup for the first time . Second and third place went to Kamil Stoch from Poland and Daniel-André Tande from Norway . In addition, Stefan Kraft was able to win the Ski Flying World Cup ahead of Andreas Wellinger and Kamil Stoch. In the team classification, Poland prevailed ahead of the teams from Austria and Germany.
The women's World Cup started on December 1st on Lysgårdsbakken in Lillehammer . By the turn of the year, the German Katharina Althaus was able to win two World Cups, as did Maren Lundby and both led the ski jumping World Cup with tied points. On December 16, 2017, a team competition was held for the first time in the Women's World Cup. The Japanese team around Yūki Itō , Kaori Iwabuchi , Yūka Setō and Sara Takanashi were able to prevail over Russia and France. The German team only finished fourth due to Svenja Würth's injury , who did not jump in the second round. The Austrian team took sixth place.
The new World Cup season began for the men on November 18th on the Malinka in Wisła . By the turn of the year, the German Richard Freitag won three World Cup competitions and led the overall World Cup. From a German point of view, Andreas Wellinger was also able to record a World Cup victory.
Four Hills Tournament
The 65th Four Hills Tournament ended on January 6th . 80 athletes took part in the traditional competition that was organized by the FIS World Federation at the end of last year and , as always, takes place in the German and Austrian cities of Oberstdorf , Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Innsbruck and Bischofshofen . The tour was part of the World Cup . The overall winner of the tour was Kamil Stoch from Poland , who was only the second of his nation after Adam Małysz in 2001. With Piotr Żyła in second place, it was the first time since 1984 that places one and two were occupied by athletes from the same nation, apart from the dominator Austria.
The 66th Four Hills Tournament began on December 30th, and will continue into the new year 2018. After Richard Freitag from Germany was able to win the qualification on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf , he finished second behind Kamil Stoch in jumping .
World Championship
From February 22 to March 5 in found Finnish Lahti , the Nordic World Ski Championships for the sports ski jumping and cross-country skiing and Nordic combined instead. In the women's category, the German Carina Vogt was able to defend her title from two years ago. She won in front of the two Japanese Yūki Itō and Sara Takanashi .
In the men's category , Stefan Kraft from Austria won the gold medal on both the large and the Normanschanze ahead of the German Andreas Wellinger . In the competition on the normal hill the German Markus Eisenbichler completed the competition and in the competition on the large hill the Pole Piotr Żyła .
In the team competition, the German team missed fourth place. The Polish team won the competition ahead of Norway and Austria. The German mixed team consisting of Carina Vogt , Markus Eisenbichler , Svenja Würth and Andreas Wellinger won the competition for the second time since 2015. They relegated the teams from Austria and Japan from second and third place.
Raw Air
The Raw Air competition was held for the first time in the 2016/17 season . Six competitions and four qualifications will be held on four hills in Norway within ten days. Both the competition jumps and the qualification jumps were included in the evaluation. In the end, the Austrian Stefan Kraft prevailed ahead of the Polish Kamil Stoch and the German Andreas Wellinger .
Lillehammer Triple
In the 2017/18 women's ski jumping season, the Lillehammer Triple was held for the first time between December 1st and 3rd, 2017 . There were two competitions on the normal hill and one competition on the large hill. With two victories, the German Katharina Althaus was able to prevail over the Norwegian Maren Lundby and the Japanese Yūki Itō .

Australian Open
The 105th Australian Open took place from January 16-29 in Melbourne , Australia . The winners in the singles were two well-known old masters, the Swiss Roger Federer (18th Grand Slam title) for the men and the American Serena Williams (23rd Grand Slam title) for the women, who beat her older in the final Sister met Venus .
French Open
The 116th French Open took place from May 28th to June 11th in the French capital Paris . The defending champions in the singles were the Serb Novak Đoković for the men and the Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza for the women. The individual winner was Jeļena Ostapenko , who won her first Grand Slam title, while Rafael Nadal , who won the tournament for the tenth time, won his 15th Grand Slam title overall.
Wimbledon
The 131st Wimbledon Championships took place from July 3rd to 16th in the London borough of Wimbledon . The defending champions of the traditional individual competition were British Andy Murray for men and American Serena Williams for women. Garbiñe Muguruza , who won her second Grand Slam title after winning the French Open in 2016, secured the women's individual title, while Roger Federer , who won the tournament for the eighth time, won the men's and his 19th Grand -Slam title could celebrate.
US Open
The 136th US Open will take place from August 28 to September 10 in the US city of New York . The defending champions in the singles are Swiss Stan Wawrinka for men and German Angelique Kerber for women.
