Joe Robinson (born May 31, 1927 in Newcastle upon Tyne , † July 3, 2017 in Brighton , East Sussex ) was a British wrestler and actor .

Life

Robinson, who came from a family of wrestlers - father Joseph and grandfather John were world champions - initially followed in their footsteps and achieved the European title in 1952; his ring name was Tiger Joe . He also had great success in judo and wore the black belt in karate . After a back injury, however, he concentrated on his training as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , which he had already begun, and in the same year was able to book an appearance in London's West End (in the musical Wish you were here ).

His first film appearance combined his sport with acting: in Voller Wunder ist das Leben , he was the ring opponent of Primo Carnera . By the early 1960s, he was busy on both screen and television; In addition to roles as an actor, he was also a sought-after stunt coordinator (e.g. for James Bond films). He also followed a call from Italy, where he played strong heroes in some mythological films. In the middle of the decade he retired from the film business to have a final appearance in the Bond film James Bond 007 - Diamond Fever in 1971 .

Together with his brother Doug and Honor Blackman , he published the book Honor Blackman's Book of Self-Defense , Penguin Books (1967) in 1964.

Robinson lived in Brighton and ran a combat center there; He hit the headlines in 1998 when he (at the age of 70) set off a group of eight muggers in Cape Town .
