David John "Dave" Semenko (born July 12, 1957 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; † June 29, 2017 in Edmonton , Alberta ) was a Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout who worked for the Edmonton Oilers , Hartford Whalers from 1977 to 1988 and Toronto Maple Leafs played in the World Hockey Association and National Hockey League . With the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985 . The left winger was due to his body-hugging style of play and robustness as an enforcer , who acted in the service of the Oilers as the "protector" of Wayne Gretzky on the ice.
Career
Semenko played for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL) during his junior years . Already at the Wheat Kings he stood out because of his tough style of play and sat in 152 WHL games a total of 511 penalty minutes on the bench. He was selected at the WHA Amateur Draft 1977 in the second round at a total of 21st position by the Houston Eros and at the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 in the second round at a total of 25th position by the Minnesota North Stars . He played with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL until 1978 and was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in November 1978 . Semenko played with the Oilers in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in his first two years in Edmonton . Semenko was the final goalscorer in the WHA before it broke up. After the dissolution of the WHA in 1979, he moved with the Oilers in the National Hockey League .
In the following season, the Canadian was part of the team's regular squad and fulfilled his task of protecting the then stars of the Oilers, Wayne Gretzky , Jari Kurri and Paul Coffey . After he started the 1980/81 season in the Central Hockey League with the Wichita Wind , he completed most of the season back in Edmonton. That season, he received just 88 penalty minutes in 66 NHL games, the lowest rate in his NHL career. In the following season he reached 196 penalty minutes in 63 games. He celebrated his greatest successes in the 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons when he won the Stanley Cup with the Oilers .
On December 12, 1986, the Oilers gave him a third-round vote for 1988 to the Hartford Whalers . Semenko completed 55 NHL games for the Whalers. It was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 8, 1987 . The Whalers received defender Bill Root as compensation . In Toronto Semenko made it again to a regular player and ended his active career after the 1987/88 season .
After a break of several years from the ice hockey business, in which he supervised games of the Edmonton Oilers as a commentator, Semenko was hired by his former team from Edmonton as an assistant coach before the 1996/97 season . From the following season he acted as a professional scout . He held this post for a total of 18 years until the summer of 2015. He died on June 29, 2017 in Edmonton of complications from cancer .
