Joe Cilia

Joseph "Joe" Cilia (born October 22, 1937 - † August 5, 2017 in Msida ) was a Maltese football player on the position of defender , who also worked as a coach after the end of his active career .

Cilia began his active career in 1953 in the youth department of Rabat FC , where he received his first professional contract before the 1955/56 season . After a year he moved to Valletta FC , where he was under contract until at least 1964. During this time he won the Maltese football championship three times with the Citizens and the Maltese cup competition twice . During the same period, Cilia was voted Footballer of the Year in Malta twice and played a total of nine international matches for the Maltese national team between 1957 and 1962 . On February 24, 1957, he played against Austria , the first international match in Malta's history, which the Austrians won 3-2.

In the mid-1960s, Cilia moved to Australia , where he initially worked as a player- coach for the Melita Eagles . He then continued his playing career at Sutherland and the Corinthians , before returning to Valletta in 1971, where he ended his playing career in 1973.

Trainer

After his active career, Cilia worked as head coach at his former clubs FC Valletta (1983 to 1985) and Rabat Ajax (1985/86), with each of which he was champion and also celebrated a cup victory at his second coaching station. He then worked as head coach for FC Birkirkara (1986 to 1988) and Hibernians Paola (1989 to 1992).
