The highlights of the badminton year 2016 were the Summer Olympics , the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup . Important tournament series were the BWF Super Series and the BWF Grand Prix . At multisport events, badminton was part of the program at the European Universities Games and the South Asian Games .

BDO World Darts Championship
The Darts World Cup of BDO took place between the 2nd and the 10th January at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. In the women's final on January 10th, the nine-time world champion Trina Gulliver from England prevailed against the world number one in the BDO ranking Deta Hedman from England and the men's final on January 10th was won by Scott Waites from England against Jeff Smith from Canada decide.
PDC World Darts Championship

The 2016 European Biathlon Championships were held by the International Biathlon Union in the Russian winter sports resort of Tyumen from February 23 to 28, 2016. Germany follows in second place with three gold medals and three silver medals and two bronze medals. Neither Austria nor Switzerland could win a medal. There was one competition for men and women in the sprint, pursuit and mass start disciplines. A single-mixed relay and mixed relay competition were also held.
The three German gold medals were won by Nadine Horchler in the sprint, Luise Kummer and Florian Graf in the mass start. Luise Kummer was also able to win the silver medal behind Russia in the single mixed race together with Matthias Dorfer. Behind two Russian athletes, Florian Graf was also able to secure the bronze medal in the pursuit. Her sister Karolin Horchler and Annika Knoll completed the purely German podium for the gold medal from Nadine Horchler . In the pursuit, Karolin Horchler was able to win the silver medal again.
Biathlon world championships
The International Biathlon Union organized the 48th Biathlon World Championships on the Holmenkollen from March 2nd to 13th in the Norwegian capital Oslo . A sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start and relay race were held for women and men, as well as a mixed team race. As with the last world championships, the single mixed relay was not part of the world championships. With Martin Fourcade and Marie Dorin-Habert, the French team provided the two best athletes of these world championships and the French team was the most successful team with 11 medals, six of which were gold medals. The German team won a gold medal and three silver and three bronze medals, making them the third best nation in the medal table. Austria followed in fourth place with a silver and a bronze medal. Switzerland could not win a medal at these biathlon world championships.
On March 2nd the world championships started with an opening ceremony and the following day the mixed relay race took place. The French team consisting of Anaïs Bescond , Marie Dorin-Habert, Quentin Fillon Maillet and Martin Fourcade won the race ahead of the German and Norwegian team. The Austrian team came in fifth and the team from Switzerland only came in 14th. The other two relay races took place on March 11th and March 12th. First there was the relay race for women, which the Norwegian team consisting of Synnøve Solemdal , Fanny Horn Birkeland , Tiril Eckhoff and Marte Olsbu . Second and third place went to France and Germany. Austria and Switzerland reached 12th and 16th place. The men's relay race was also won by the Norwegian team consisting of Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Tarjei Bø , Johannes Thingnes Bø , Emil Hegle Svendsen in front of Germany and the surprise team Canada. The Austrian team finished fourth and the Swiss team came in 10th.
The two sprint races took place on March 5th. First the men's race was held, which Martin Fourcade won ahead of Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Serhij Semenow . The best German was Arnd Peiffer in 7th place. The best Austrian Dominik Landertinger was ninth and the best Swiss Serafin Wiestner eleventh. The women's race was won by the Norwegian Tiril Eckhoff ahead of Marie Dorin-Habert and the German Laura Dahlmeier . With 16th place Lisa Hauser was best Austrian and the best Swiss Lena Häcki reached 21st place.
The pursuit races, which built on the sprint races, were held on March 6th. In the sprint race, Martin Fourcade was able to win his third gold. Second and third place went to Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Emil Hegle Svendsen. The best German was Eric Lesser in seventh place, best Austrian Dominik Landertinger in 13th and best Swiss Serafin Wiestner in 20th place. Laura Dahlmeier won the pursuit race for women ahead of Dorothea Wierer and Marie Dorin-Habert . Lisa Hauser, the best Austrian, was 20th and Lena Häcki, the best Swiss, was 33rd.
The individual races were held on March 9th and 10th. The women's race started and the French Marie Dorin-Habert won the race ahead of Anaïs Bescond and Laura Dahlmeier. Lisa Hauser was the best Austrian when she was 13 and Selina Gasparin was the best Swiss when she was 17 . In the men's category, Martin Fourcade won his fourth gold in front of the two Austrians Dominik Landertinger and Simon Eder . Eric Lesser was the best German in seventh place and the best Swiss Benjamin Weger only reached 49th place.
The two mass start races concluded on March 13th. In the women's race that started first, Marie Dorin-Habert won ahead of Laura Dahlmeier and Kaisa Mäkäräinen . The best Austrian was Lisa Hauser in 21. A Swiss starter did not qualify for the mass start. Johannes Thingnes Bø won the men's race ahead of Martin Fourcade and Ole Einar Bjørndalen. Arnd Peiffer was the best German fifth and Simon Eder was the best Austrian eleventh. The best Swiss Serafin Wiestner landed in 27th place.
Bandy
World Bandy Championship for Women
Between February 18 and 21, the eighth Women's World Bandy Championship was held at the Guidant John Rose Minnesota Oval in the US city of Roseville . The World Cup was opened with the game between the United States and China on February 18. In the final on February 21, Sweden and Russia were the only brandy world champions to date. The Swedes beat defending champions Russia 1-0 and won their seventh World Bandy title. In the game for third place, Norway beat Canada 2: 3.
World Bandy Championship
The 36th World Bandy Championship was held from February 1st to 14th in the Russian city of Ulyanovsk . With the exception of two games, which were played in Dimitrovgrad , all games of the World Cup took place in Ulyanovsk.
The so-called A-Division was opened by the game between the United States and Latvia on February 1st and ended with the final between Russia and Finland on February 7th. The Russian team prevailed 6-1 and won their tenth world title. In the game for third place Sweden beat Kazakhstan 4-0.
The B Division began with the game between Mongolia and Japan opened on February 10th. On February 14th the final of the B-Division between Germany and Hungary was played, in which Germany prevailed 5-4. By winning the tournament, the German team can take part in the A-Division at the next Bandy World Cup, while Latvia will take part in the B-Division at the next World Cup.

World Snooker Championship
The World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association hosted the World Snooker Championship between April 16 and May 2 . The world championship marks the end of the 2015/16 snooker season and was held at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield , England . The Chinese Ding Junhui and England's Mark Selby faced each other in the finals on May 1st and 2nd . With 14:18 the Chinese lost against the Englishman Mark Selby and was able to win the snooker world championship for the second time since 2014 . He also secured first place in the world rankings. Ding Junhui was able to improve to ninth place in the world rankings and was the first Chinese snooker professional to reach the final of a world championship. The highest break in the tournament was reached by the Englishman Kyren Wilson with 143 .
Handball
Men's handball African championship
From January 21 to 30, 2016, the Confédération Africaine de Handball organized the 22nd African handball championship in Egypt . With the game between Angola and Kenya, the African Cup of Nations opened in Cairo on January 21st. In the final on January 30th, host Egypt and record winner Tunisia faced each other. With the 21:19 victory, the hosts were able to qualify for their seventh title and thus also the qualification for the Olympic handball tournament in Rio de Janeiro and for the 2017 World Cup in France . In addition, Tunisia and Angola could also participate in the World Cup.
Men's Handball Asian Championship
The 17th European Handball Championship was held by the Asian Handball Federation from January 15 to January 28 for the second time in a row in Bahrain . The opening game of the tournament was the game between China and the United Arab Emirates on January 15th in Madinat Isa . European men's handball championship
The European Handball Federation hosted the 12th European Men's Handball Championship in Poland from January 15th to 31st . The European Championship opened on January 15th in Katowice with the match between Croatia and Belarus . The final between Germany and Spain took place in Krakow on January 31st . There the German national team was able to prevail with 24:17. The Germans thus secured their second European championship title after 2004 and qualified for the Olympic handball tournament in Rio de Janeiro and for the 2017 World Cup in France . In addition, Spain qualified as second finalist and Croatia as third place for the World Cup. The 29th European Fencing Championships took place from June 20 to 25, 2016 in Toruń ( Poland ).
Soccer
African Nations Championship
The Confédération Africaine de Football hosted the 4th African Nations Cup in Rwanda from January 16 to February 7 . Compared to the African Championship , only players who play in their home leagues are allowed in this tournament. The tournament was opened on January 16 with the match between Rwanda and Ivory Coast in Kigali and the match between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia in Butare . In the final the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali faced each other and the DR Congo prevailed 3-0. They won for the second time after 2009 and are the record winners of the competition.
CAF Super Cup
The 24th CAF Super Cup was held on February 20th at the Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi . The winner of the CAF Champions League in 2015 was TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo qualified and the Tunisian club Etoile Sportive du Sahel as the winner of the CAF Confederations Cup 2015. With 2: 1 was able to win the Champions League winners and after 2010 and secure their third title in 2011.
U-23 soccer Asian championship
The 2nd U-23 Asian Football Championship was hosted by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) between January 12th and 30th in Qatar . With a total of 21 races, this Formula 1 season sets a new record. Compared to last year, the German Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix return to the racing calendar. For the first time, the European Grand Prix will be held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku . There were also innovations in the teams. The Lotus F1 Team was taken over by Renault and now operates under the name Renault Sport F1 Team . As a result, Renault has had a works team again since 2009. With the entry of Haas F1 Team , 11 teams with two drivers each are competing in the F1 World Championship.
