Michael George Hartwell "Mike" MacDowel (born September 13, 1932 in Great Yarmouth ; † January 18, 2016 ) was a British automobile racing driver .
Career
MacDowel was an amateur racing driver who contested his first races in the small Lotus sports car. In 1955 he celebrated ten victories in national races. In 1956 he became a works driver for Cooper and drove their sports car.
In 1957 he had his only appearance in the automobile world championship . At the French Grand Prix in Reims , he started with a works Cooper T43 . About halfway through the race, he had to hand the car over to his team-mate Jack Brabham , who had already retired and finished seventh. At the end of the year he finished second at the Prix de Paris in Montlhéry .
After many years of absence, MacDowel returned to motorsport in 1968 and won the British Hill Climbing Championship in 1973 and 1974. As a 60-year-old MacDowel drove hill climbs and competed in events for historic racing vehicles until shortly before his death.
