Ron Southern
Ronald D. Southern , CC CBE (born July 25, 1930 in Calgary , Alberta ; † January 21, 2016 ibid), was a Canadian entrepreneur and riding stable owner.
In 1947 he founded the ATCO Group together with his father , was Chairman of the Board of ATCO until 2012 and Director of ATCO Structures & Logistics Ltd. until his death. He also founded AKITA Drilling Ltd., which is also listed, and of which he was the main shareholder. In 2015, Forbes put its net worth at 1.55 million Canadian dollars .
In 1975, he and his wife Margaret founded the Spruce Meadows riding stable, which grew into the largest riding stable in the world within 28 years. He is the father of show jumpers Linda Southern-Heathcott and Nancy Southern . In 2006, he and his wife were inducted into the Hall of Fame for Canadian Sports .
