Abel Dhaira (born September 9, 1987 in Walukuba , Jinja District , † March 27, 2016 in Iceland ) was a Ugandan football goalkeeper .
Career
Born in south-eastern Uganda to the Ugandan national soccer player Bright Dhaira , Dhaira began playing soccer at the age of nine. After playing for various clubs as a youth, he was signed by first division club Express FC in 2006 , with whom he won the national cup competition in 2007 . The following year the goalkeeper moved to the Uganda Revenue Authority SC and won the Ugandan championship there . After only one year Dhaira signed a contract with the Congolese first division club AS Vita Club , which the Ugandan left again in 2010. In 2011 he signed a contract with Icelandic first division club ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar , where he made his debut on May 29, 2011 in a 2-0 win over Víkingur Reykjavík and became the first Ugandan goalkeeper in a first European football league. As a regular goalkeeper of the Icelandic club, Dhaira joined the Tanzanian first division team Simba SC for one season in 2013 before returning to ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar in 2014. Dhaira became the first Ugandan goalkeeper to make his debut in the UEFA Europa League , in which he played a total of three games, in the 2-0 loss to Irish club St Patrick's Athletic . On September 26, 2015, the goalkeeper came against Breiðablik Kópavogur (0-1) for his 58th and last appearance in the Pepsideild .
Abel Dhaira made his debut on January 1, 2009 at the CECAFA Cup 2008 against Rwanda (4: 0) for the Ugandan national team and came on June 1, 2013 in the 3-0 defeat in Libya to his 13th and last international match. With the national team he had won the East and Central African Championships in 2008, 2011 and 2012 , the first two titles as the goalkeeper of the "Kraniche".
In January 2016, his health deteriorated. This was followed by a six-week hospital stay at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala . After returning to Iceland, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. A little later he succumbed to this disease in Iceland.
