The 36th edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 2012 Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup , was held between November 24th and December 8th 2012 in the Ugandan capital Kampala in the Mandela National Stadium , after Kenya had originally been chosen as the organizer of the tournament, which the East African Breweries Ltd. as a sponsor, however, declined.

Game mode

Twelve teams took part in the tournament, including Malawi, which was not a member of CECAFA and the only invited team, and South Sudan , which was taking part in an international tournament for the first time.

The draw for the preliminary group took place on November 12, 2012. The twelve participating countries played in three groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up as well as the two best thirds in the group qualified for the quarter-finals. The winners played in the semi-finals for a place in the final. The losers in the semi-finals played for third place.
