The sixth edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 1978 Palmares CECAFA Championship , took place in Malawi from November 1st to 19th, 1978 . Five East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions. Host Malawi won their first title.

Game mode

The five participating countries played against each other in a group. The group runner-up played against the group fourth and the group first against the group third in the semi-finals. The two semi-final winners played for the title in the final. The semi-final losers played for third place.
