The first edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 1973 Palmares CECAFA Championship , took place in Uganda from September 22 to 29, 1973 . Six East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions. Host Uganda won its first title. The CECAFA Cup is considered the successor to the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup .

Game mode

The six participating countries played in two groups of three teams each. The two group winners played for the title in the final.
