The CECAFA-Cup , completely CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup ( German East and Central African Championship ), is a football competition for East and Central African teams that has been held annually since 1973, with the exception of 1986, 1993, 1997 and 1998, and is organized by CECAFA becomes. In principle, its eleven member associations are eligible to participate. Teams from neighboring regions, especially southern Africa , are invited almost regularly and tournaments have already been held there in the past. With Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, three such teams have already entered the list of winners. Forerunner tournaments were from 1926 to 1966 the Gossage Cup , the oldest football tournament in Africa (sponsored by soap maker William Gossage), and from 1967 to 1971 the Challenge Cup .
In 2005 and 2006, the tournament was sponsored by Saudi billionaire Sheikh Mohammed Al Amoudi and renamed the Al Amoudi Senior Challenge Cup until 2007 .
