The fifth edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 1977 Palmares CECAFA Championship , took place in Somalia from November 30 to December 9, 1977 . Seven East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions in football. Uganda won its third title. The CECAFA Cup is considered the successor to the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup .
The seven participating countries played in two groups with three and four teams respectively. The group runner-up played against the group leader of the other group in the semi-finals. The two semi-final winners played for the title in the final. The semi-final losers played for third place for the first time.
