The fourteenth edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 1987 Palmares CECAFA Championship , took place in Ethiopia from December 13-27, 1987 . Seven East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions. Hosts Ethiopia won their first title. For the first time there was a qualification.
Two of the 8 participating countries had to play a qualifying match to take part in the final round. The seven qualified teams played in two groups with three and four teams respectively. The group runner-up played against the group leader of the other group in the semi-finals. The two semi-final winners played for the title in the final, the semi-final losers for third place.
