The 33rd edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially the 2009 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup , took place from November 28, 2009 to December 13, 2009 in Kenya . Twelve East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions. Uganda won its eleventh title.

The Sudan missed the registration deadline.

The tournament was sponsored by the French telecommunications company Orange . With 175,000 US dollars you got the rights.

Game mode

The twelve participating countries played in three groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up as well as the two best thirds in the group qualified for the quarter-finals. The winners played in the semi-finals for a place in the final. The losers in the semi-finals play for third place.

Final round

In the quarter and semi-finals, in the game for third place and in the final, the knockout system is used . If the games in the final round are tied after the regular playing time of 90 minutes, there will be two extra times of 15 minutes and, if there is still no winner after the end of extra time, there will be a penalty shoot-out .
