The 25th edition of the CECAFA Cup , officially 2001 Palmares CECAFA Championship , took place from December 8th to 22nd, 2001 in Rwanda . Eleven East and Central African teams played here for the title of East and Central African champions. Ethiopia won its second title. Sudan withdrew its participation.

Game mode

The eleven participating teams from ten countries played in three groups with two four and one three teams each. The group winners and runners-up qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The two best thirds in the group moved up. The two semi-final winners played for the title in the final. The semi-final losers played for 3rd place.
