The CECAFA Cup 2017 , officially the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2017 , was the 39th edition of the football competition for East and Central African national teams. It was held in Kenya from December 3 to 17, 2017 . Eight member associations of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations and an invited team from the Confédération Africaine de Football took part in the tournament.

Uganda only achieved third place as defending champions, while hosts Kenya prevailed against Zanzibar by winning their seventh title in the final .

Game mode

The nine participating countries played in two groups, one with four, one with five teams. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the semifinals. The winners of the semi-finals played for the title in the final, the losers for third place.

The teams from Libya and Zimbabwe agreed instead of Djibouti and Eritrea . Originally Zambia should have replaced Eritrea, but did not take part. Somalia , Sudan and also the representative Zimbabwe withdrew their participation in November 2017.
