Machakos is a city in Kenya , 64 kilometers southeast of Nairobi . It is the capital of Machakos County in Kenya and a Roman Catholic bishopric . Machakos is both an agricultural hub and a satellite city because of its proximity to Nairobi. The population has grown rapidly and in 1999 stood at 144,109. Most of the city's residents belong to the Kambas people . Machakos is surrounded by a hilly landscape with a high number of family farms . Machakos was founded in 1889, ten years before Nairobi.

Machakos was the first administrative center of the British colony , but Kenya's capital became Nairobi in 1899 when Machakos was passed by the Uganda Railway , which was under construction at the time. The city and county were named after Masaku, a Kamba chief.

The main locations are the Machakos sports club on a large site including a 9-hole golf course.

Important schools are the Machakos Primary School and Machakos Boys School. Another well-known school is Mumbuni High School .

A place on one of the surrounding hills is famous for "water that flows against gravity". It is located on Kituluni Hill, 12 km east of Machakos.
