Dolmuş (Turkish: filled ) is the name of a special type of shared taxi in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . The dolmuş is part of the typical appearance of Turkey. These means of public transport operate on fixed short routes ( Turkish “hat”) and take over a large part of local public transport . The name is based on the fact that the dolmuş only leaves when enough seats are occupied.

Minibuses, automobiles , boats and motor boats are used as dolmuş in Turkey .

history

In the past, dolmuş operation was only used to cross the Bosphorus and Golden Horn via the kayık . The term “Dolmuş” officially appears for the first time in the Turkish dictionary “Kâmus-u Türkî” in the middle of the 19th century. The dolmuş operation with the automobile has been carried out since 1931. In the past, the total amount was divided among the passengers. The Dolmuş operation took place first in Istanbul and was also transferred to other large cities. In 1939, the city of Istanbul (Istanbul Belediyesi) introduced a regulation that involved the dolmuş. The regulation determined the fare (12.5  Kuruş ) on the Eminönü - Şişli route . To this day, further regulations have been added and others have been abolished, such as the minimum requirement for a Dolmuş car or minibus driver to be at least 25 years old and married and to have a good reputation.

Market share & prices

In 1970, 43% of all passenger traffic in Istanbul was carried out using the dolmuş.

The fares differ locally and depend on the route and the competition. There is also local competition between the Dolmuş entrepreneurs and the city buses, so that prices are also reduced on both sides.

Dolmuş as minibuses

The Turkish name Minibüs means minibus. The journey begins at the cycle time (e.g. 20-minute intervals) or, if the seats are sufficiently occupied, before the departure time. The destination is indicated by a sign on the windshield and called out loudly. You have to give the driver a hand sign in order to express the wish to ride and to be taken. To get out, you have to call out to the driver or his assistant (if available) to stop and you can stop at any stop on the route, such as. B. at the edge of the road. The current fares can be found in the list displayed in the minibus . You have to put the amount on the dashboard or have it passed on to the driver or assistant. Tickets are not issued.
