Manavgat is a district town in the province of Antalya on the Turkish Riviera with 215,526 inhabitants (as of 2014). It is located 75 km east of Antalya, 60 km northwest of Alanya and 7 km northeast of the ancient city and the resort of Side .

Manavgat lies in the fertile plain between the Taurus Mountains and the mouth of the Manavgat River . Cotton, grain, sesame, many types of fruit and vegetables and flowers (some in greenhouses) are grown on the plain. The first banana plantations can also be found here. Trout and prawns are farmed on the river.

A large part of the Turkish population active in tourism in Side and the surrounding hotels lives in Manavgat ; the place serves as a logistics center for tourism; this explains its steady growth.

The river of the same name flows through the town, which is a popular destination with its large waterfall ( büyük şelale ) and small waterfall ( küçük şelale - rather rapids ) and the fish restaurants that are partly built over the river. Otherwise Manavgat is still known regionally for its large bazaar and spice market, which are frequented by locals and tourists.

Striking is a single-lane steel bridge over the river, which was built between 1931 and 1938 by the German company Krupp . For a long time, this bridge was the only connection between the two banks of the river.

There are two reservoirs upstream , which can be accessed by excursion boats in summer. The upper reservoir ( Oymapınar dam ) has a 360 m long and 157 m high dam and a storage space of 300 million m³. It was built in 1984 to supply drinking water and generate energy.

development

With tourism, Manavgat grew from a formerly small village to a larger city with many shops, shopping centers, restaurants and bars. A new, artificially built waterfall was created in the middle of the city. The Ataturk statue above the waterfall forms an appealing picture together with the waterfall and is therefore very popular with tourists.

Furthermore, a new bridge was built, which is also called Yeni Köprü (new bridge). It is handicapped accessible and there is an elevator at both ends of the bridge.
