Crown of the dam |
The Oymapınar Dam on the Manavgat River is located in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey , about 80 km east of Antalya and 25 km inland from the coast. It is the largest dam in the region.
The Oymapınar dam is a double-curved arch dam , that is, the wall is curved horizontally and vertically. The arch dam has a total height of 185.40 m. The dam is divided into 24 blocks, each 15 m wide. The base joint is located 30 m below the former surface. There is a 7.50 m wide roadway on the Krone.
A total of 676,000 m³ (according to other information 573,000 m³) of concrete was used in the structure. The cavern power plant with four turbines , which is located in an underground cavern in the rock, has a maximum output of 540 MW. This is 3% of the total Turkish installed capacity.
The bedrock consists of heavily karstified dolomitic limestone , which is criss-crossed with fissures. Therefore an extensive sealing curtain had to be installed under the wall . The reservoir had to be sealed to prevent water loss through ponors .
The dam was built by the Turkish state and planned by the French engineering firm Coyne et Bellier from Paris. The main contractor was the company Bilfinger und Berger from Mannheim. The construction work on the dam wall was finished in February 1983. When entering the area around 3 km around the dam, 1 lira or 50 euro cents per person must be paid (as of September 2012).
Below the wall at the stilling basin is a 40 m high so-called "baby dam". This basin serves to calm the water from the bottom outlet and the flood relief system . This is a double-shot channel next to the wall, over which the water shoots spectacularly in an arc when it overflows.
Reservoir
The reservoir has a surface of 470 (or 500) ha and a storage space of 300 million m³. Even if it can only be reached via a serpentine road, the reservoir is a tourist destination. In the summer months boat tours are offered and the restaurants near the shore are open.
