background
New route
In the run-up to the Monte Carlo Rally , the Monaco Automobile Club (ACM) announced an extensively modified route.
On the Wednesday before the rally, there was a new training test for the WRC drivers. This was 3.33 kilometers long and was located in Gap , the hometown of three-time WRC world champion Sébastien Ogier . As in 2014 and 2015 , the service park was also set up in Gap. The fact that the shakedown also took place there was new. The 2016 rally began on Thursday evening with the Entrevaux - Rouaine and Barles - Seyne les Alpes stages . On Friday, as in 2015, we went to the region north of Gap. There the exams Corps - La Salle en Beaumont, Aspres les Corps - Chauffayer and Les Costes - Chaillol were each on the program twice. Saturday was the longest day of the competition. It covers more than half of the total special stage kilometers of the entire rally. Initially, two stages were ridden twice: The “King's Trial” Lardier et Valenca - Faye (51.17 kilometers) and Saint Leger les Melezes - La Baatie Neuve (17.03) before returning to the Principality of Monaco , where the 36.35 Kilometer long test Sisteron - Thoard concluded the day. On the final day the races Col de l'Orme - Saint-Laurent, La Bollene - Vesubie Peira Cava were on the schedule. It went over the Col de Turini before the Col de l'Orme - Saint Laurent special stage , which had already been driven, was run a second time. The power stage was carried out during the final crossing .
Reports
Day 1 (Thursday, January 21)
Punctually at 20:18 the start took place on the first special stage of the WRC season 2016 . Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) set the fastest time in the first night stage of the Monte Carlo Rally . The reigning world champion was the first to tackle the 21.25 kilometer route "Entrevaux - Val de Chalvagne - Rouaine" . In this case, this was an advantage and not a disadvantage as usual, because instead of having to drive the road clean and losing time, slush was thrown onto the ideal line with every further driver who started in the corners. There was also some black ice in some corners.
Kris Meeke (Citroën) lost around four seconds to Ogier in SS1 and he was not entirely satisfied as first place would have been possible. However, Meeke spun in one of the many switchbacks on the course. Third place was Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) to the finish, followed by the third Polo with Jari-Matti Latvala behind the wheel. The best Hyundai after SS1 was Thierry Neuville in fifth, eleven seconds behind.
The second special stage was held on the "Barles - Seyne" route . This special stage was ridden for the first time since 1983 , but in the opposite direction. It went up to almost 1500 meters and over the Col du Fagnet pass . The roads were mostly icy and the second special stage was far more difficult than the first special stage.
Meeke was fifth at the start line and at the finish he was significantly faster than the Volkswagen trio. He distanced Ogier with 6.9 and Mikkelsen with 20 seconds in the overall standings. In the meantime, Latvala was in first place, but he ran over an obstacle and the suspension was broken. As a result, he slipped to seventh place. In fourth place was Neuville with the new Hyundai i20, after driving on safety, as he himself said.
“The first test was okay, the grip was good. The second was different, much more icy. "
Day 2 (Friday, January 22nd)
Friday was marked by the duel between Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) and Kris Meeke (Citroën). A total of six special stages were on the program near the French city of Gap . Ogier set four best times, Meeke two. After the seventh special stage, Meeke took the lead, but on the last special stage of the day Ogier regained the top position. After eight of a total of 16 special stages, Ogier was leading Meeke by 9.5 seconds.
Vice world champion Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) was third, 1:08 minutes behind. According to his own statement, he can no longer fight for victory. The goal is now to achieve a podium.
The rally turned out to be difficult for Hyundai. In the morning the set-up was too soft and Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo had trouble handling the cars. After a change in the lunch service, the tire choice in the afternoon turned out to be wrong. Neuville was fifth, 1:47 minutes behind, and Sordo was seventh, three minutes behind in the overall standings. Hayden Paddon , who was still driving the old i20, had an accident in SS3 after he had to leave the car behind.
The day ended early for Robert Kubica (Ford) too . In the first special stage of the day he slipped understeer off the icy road and hit a tree at slow speed. When Elfyn Evans (Ford) passed the scene of the accident, he touched the Fiesta RS WRC from Kubica with the left side of his car. The collision had no effect on the driving behavior of Evans' car other than a bump.
Eric Camilli , who drove a Ford Fiesta RS WRC from M-Sport for the first time , slipped off the road and could no longer drive either.
The best Ford driver was M-Sport returner Mads Østberg , who was sixth, more than two minutes behind. In the afternoon, Østberg had set-up problems with the car, which was new to him. On positions eight to ten, Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën), Bryan Bouffier (Ford) and Ott Tänak (Ford) rounded off the top ten. After a rollover, Tänak was able to continue to the finish.
“If I make it into the top 3, then I would be satisfied. When I have faith, I attack. If not, I'll take off the gas. "
3rd day (Saturday, January 23rd)
In the course of the five special stages over a total of 174 timed kilometers, Sébastien Ogier took off time from competitor Kris Meeke . By the lunchtime service, Meeke's deficit had grown to half a minute. In the afternoon, Meeke retired. In special stage 12, Meeke ran over a large stone that was lying in the middle of the road and tore off part of the underbody protection. The blow was so severe that the car's transmission was damaged.
Behind the world champion, a duel between Andreas Mikkelsen and Thierry Neuville developed over the course of the day . In the morning Mikkelsen played poker properly when choosing tires and set the fastest time in SS10. In the afternoon, the new Hyundai showed its potential for the first time. Neuville set the fastest time in special stages 12 and 13. Thus Mikkelsen stayed second, but Neuville was only 12.5 seconds behind the Volkswagen driver.
Jari-Matti Latvala was no longer there . In SS11 he damaged the left front wheel suspension in a slip. Latvala was able to repair the damage in a makeshift manner, but he was late for the twelfth special stage and had to drive to the service park . Since the Rally 2 regulations were not applied to the Monte Carlo Rally, he was no longer allowed to start on Sunday.
“Third place would be very good for the team. I get to know the car and look for balance. This car has a lot of potential! "
4th day (Sunday, January 24th)
With a maximum of 25 points for victory and three points for winning the power stage , Sébastien Ogier had won the Monte Carlo Rally for the third time in a row. His teammate Andreas Mikkelsen climbed onto the podium of the top three in second. Despite technical problems, Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) came third.
M-Sport pilot Mads Østberg took fourth place in the end. There were no major incidents, but Østberg did not see any fast times either. Østberg was on the road with a new co-driver. Ola Fløne came from Mikkelsen to Østberg in the car and at Mikkelsen Anders Jæger sat on the pillion for the first time.
In fifth place, young driver Stéphane Lefebvre was the best Citroën driver at the finish. Ott Tänak (Ford) was not competitive with his tire brand and crossed the finish line in eighth place behind Dani Sordo (Hyundai).
"It is also a success for the team, because my ice spies have worked perfectly."
WRC2
In the WRC2 class, Elfyn Evans drove confidently to class victory in the redesigned Ford Fiesta R5 . Armin Kremer ( Škoda) was overtaken by Esapekka Lappi (Škoda) on Sunday . Since Lappi was not registered for the WRC2, Kremer took second place in the overall ranking of this class. In the overall standings of all classes, Kremer came tenth and won a world championship point for the overall WRC World Championship classification.
