The 36th Rally Argentina was the 4th round of the 2016 World Rally Championship . It lasted from April 21st to April 24th, 2016. A total of 18 special stages were driven on gravel.

background

route

The service park was located in the seaside resort of Villa Carlos Paz , 700 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires and around 30 minutes by car from the city of Córdoba .

After the first, particularly spectator-friendly, special stage in Córdoba on Thursday evening, it went south on Friday to the fast and sandy roads in the Santa Rosa de Calamuchita valley. Some of these special stages were driven four years ago.

On Saturday the route from Villa Carlos Paz went north. The special stages were near the city of Ischilin , where the route last took place in 2003.

On Sunday, stony roads in the Traslasierra Mountains were waiting for the drivers. The area looks almost like a lunar landscape and includes the classic special stages El Cóndor ( power stage ) and Giulio Cesare (SS17).

The El Condor special stage has been the highlight of the Argentina Rally for more than 30 years. The destination of the special stage, named after the giant vulture that lives here, was over 2140 meters above sea level. Huge boulders lined the gravel roads in this area, and there was not a tree to be seen. The start was at around 750 meters above sea level, from there it was 16.32 kilometers steadily uphill. In many places, driving precision was required because the streets are so narrow that driving errors usually ended with torn off wheels or other damage to the cars.

After only 12 special stages were driven in 2015 , the number of special stages had been increased to 18 in 2016. Since most of the special stages were new for the drivers and co-drivers, the records had to be re-created without empirical values.

Auto setup

The cars were set up for gravel roads and the chassis was set to the highest spring level, as there was a risk that the cars hit the underbody on the sometimes extremely bumpy and stone-strewn slopes. A hard and a slightly softer variant of tires were available to the teams.

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, April 21)

The first special stage of the rally was a 1.5-kilometer, spectator-friendly special stage in Córdoba . While Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) and Dani Sordo (Hyundai) came out of the only stage of the first day as leaders at the same time, Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) had to use an emergency exit in a curve. Latvala lost four seconds to the leaders.

Day 2 (Friday, April 22nd)

After four special stages, Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) was in the lead , but he did not give it up until Friday evening. Latvala set the fastest time in three special stages. Behind him, world champion Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) was just eight seconds behind Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon . Ogier and Paddon were only 3.5 seconds apart after the second day of the rally.

Fourth place went to Andreas Mikkelsen , who lost over 25 seconds to team-mate Latvala. Behind them, Dani Sordo (Hyundai), Mads Østberg (M-Sport Ford) and Henning Solberg (Ford) drove through the day's goal. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) was unlucky, losing over seven and a half minutes in the fourth special stage due to engine problems.

3rd day (Saturday, April 23rd)

Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon led the Rally Argentina on Saturday evening. Due to a serious accident with Volkswagen driver Jari-Matti Latvala , who was in the lead until special stage 14, Paddon took the lead. Latvala overturned three times at top speed, whereupon he and his co-driver Mikka Anttila had to go to the hospital for an examination as a precaution. Both were discharged from the hospital uninjured after a few hours. World champion Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) had already lost contact with the top duo before, after the third day of the rally he was 29.8 seconds behind Paddon.

In third place at this point was the third Volkswagen driver, Andreas Mikkelsen (+44.3 seconds), who won the last stage of the day and stayed within striking distance of Ogier. Daniel Sordo (Hyundai) was fourth, behind Mads Østberg ( M-Sport Ford) fifth, Marcos Ligato (Citroën) sixth and Henning Solberg (Ford) seventh. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) improved from tenth to eighth place compared to the previous day. Latvala slipped to tenth place after the accident, he started again on Sunday under the rally 2 regulations .

4th day (Sunday, April 24th)

Engine misfires in the Hyundai i20 WRC made the duel at the top between Hayden Paddon and Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) exciting again. Before the last special stage, Ogier was 2.6 seconds behind Paddon. After the first Sunday test, in foggy conditions, Paddon had reported problems with the car. On the last special stage, the power stage , the car ran surprisingly well and he even managed to get 11.2 seconds out of Ogier. Hayden Paddon and co-driver John Kennard are the first New Zealanders to win a world championship run.

“I just gave everything. I can not believe it."

- Hayden Paddon : motorsport-total.com

Third place went to Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) ahead of Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and Mads Østberg (Ford). To the sixth fought Thierry Neuville , Henning Solberg (Ford) and Marcos Ligato (Citroen). Neuville finally prevailed. Ligato (Citroën) was seventh, Eric Camilli (Ford) eighth and Henning Solberg (Ford) only ninth. The first ten places were rounded off by Nicholas Fuchs (Škoda), who emerged as the winner in the WRC2 classification after Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Škoda) rolled over in the 13th special stage.
