background

The tires

The studded tires , especially for snow-covered roads, are 195 millimeters wide and narrower than the gravel and asphalt tires. The 384 spikes per tire are screwed in 13.5 millimeters and protrude 6.5 millimeters. This competition tire was only allowed to be used in the Rally Sweden. A maximum of 24 of these tires were available per World Rally Car .

Colin's Crest

The most famous special stage of the Rally Sweden is located about 90 kilometers north of Karlstad . The Vargåsen special stage is typical of this event. Fast, flowing roads invite you to go full throttle through the Swedish forest. The highlight of the stage is the Colin's Crest jump , named after the late World Rally Champion Colin McRae . Despite the winter temperatures, numerous spectators come to the jump top. The Colin's Crest Award has been presented since 2008 - the length of the jumps is measured. The record holders were Ken Block (2011) and Marius Aasen (2010) with 37 meters each. In 2015, Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) broke the old record with 44 meters.

Teams and drivers

At Hyundai, Hayden Paddon got the new i20 WRC that Dani Sordo had driven in Monte Carlo . Sordo had to be content with the Motorsport N Team from Hyundai for this rally, but also sat in an i20 WRC of the latest generation.

A third car was used in the private team Abu Dhabi Total WRT . Craig Breen and Khalid Al-Qassimi got the Citroën DS3 WRC , alongside Kris Meeke . Stéphane Lefebvre had to pass.

Robert Kubica had not entered the entry list for the second world championship run.

Henning Solberg and co-driver Ilka Minor competed for the Adapta Motorsport team for the first time in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC in the 2016 season . Yazeed Al-Rajhi and co-driver Michael Orr also started for the first time . The duo made their WRC debut with a World Rally Car (Ford Fiesta RS WRC) from Al-Rajhi's own private team (Yazeed Racing).

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, February 11th)

The first and only special stage on Thursday had to be canceled due to thaw and lack of snow. On Friday, two more special stages were canceled for the same reasons.

Day 2 (Friday, February 12)

Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) had laid the foundation for the day's victory with three best times in the morning and managed his lead in the afternoon. At a waterhole, which was described less deeply in the notes from co-driver Julien Ingrassia , Ogier lost the car and he drove out into the forest. With a damaged front left wheel arch, the duo was able to continue the rally. Later a part of the wheel suspension was changed as a precaution. In the evening, the reigning world champion was 26.9 seconds ahead of Hayden Paddon in the Hyundai, who won two special stages.

Also Andreas Mikkelsen was surprised by the standing Waßer at the same place, but could continue its journey as well as team-mate Ogier, but later fell back by a mistake in the fifth special stage from second to sixth place.

Kris Meeke (Citroën) was initially in second place. In the fourth special stage, he drove the fastest time. A special stage later, Meeke wanted to catch up to first place, but had to give up his project with a broken wheel suspension due to a large stone on the road that he ran over.

Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) also had bad luck , his front drive shaft broke on the first special stage of the day. Since there was no lunch service for the cars, Latvala had to complete the remaining special stages with rear-wheel drive instead of four-wheel drive.

At Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) the differential broke and he lost over six minutes to the top.

Ott Tänak (Ford), Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and Andreas Mikkelsen are only 8.3 seconds apart, they are fighting for third place. Returnees Henning Solberg (Ford), Craig Breen (Citroën), Eric Camilli and Lorenzo Bertelli (both Ford) complete the first ten places.

“There was a really big water passage that I didn't have on my record. I couldn't steer anymore and drove into the forest. "

3rd day (Saturday, February 13th)

After Sébastien Ogier had taken the lead on Friday, he extended it with the best time in the first special stage of the day. Then the world champion with constant snowfall his starting position one almost became doomed. On the second special stage of the day, Hayden Paddon (Hyundai), who went seventh on the road cleared of loose snow, caught up more than 20 seconds and was only 8.8 seconds behind the front runner. Ogier had to risk a lot on the next two stages and was only lucky to avoid an accident on the second pass of the Vargåsen special stage . However, the risk paid off. The Volkswagen driver increased the lead over Paddon again.

On Friday there was a four-way battle for third place. Mads Østberg (Ford) can count on third place after ten of twelve special stages. On Sunday there is only one special stage to drive, the other planned three special stages had to be canceled. Østberg had a lead of 24.5 seconds over Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) in the evening. Mikkelsen lost a lot of time in an accident on the ninth special stage.

The day ended early for M-Sport driver Eric Camilli (Ford). On the first special stage of the day, he went off the road and rolled over. Camilli and co-driver Nicolas Klinger survived the violent accident unscathed.

On Saturday, the Vargassen special stage with the Colin's Crest jump was on the program twice . WRC2 driver Eyvind Brynildsen (Ford), who flew 45 meters , made the furthest set . With that he beat the record of Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) from the previous year by one meter.

“We want to maintain our position, have to be smart and bring home the podium. That would be a great result. "

4th day (Sunday, February 14th)

Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia

Three of four special stages had to be canceled on Sunday due to impassable roads. Only the 21st and last special stage of Sunday, the power stage , was driven.

After twelve special stages, Sébastien Ogier prevailed against Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon , who was second, 29.8 seconds back. Third was Mads Østberg (Ford), who was able to look forward to the first podium after his return to Team M-Sport .

Ogier also won the power stage on the final day and thus secured three additional points, so that he led the drivers' world championship after two of 14 runs with the maximum number of 56 points. Further additional points in the power stage went to Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) and Kris Meeke (Citroën), who finished in second and third place respectively.

Paddon had to tremble a little for second place. On the last special stage, he hit a wooden post on the side of the road and damaged the radiator in the process. Paddon and co-driver John Kennard had to do an emergency repair at the finish and they reached the service park in Karlstad, around 80 kilometers away, on their own. According to the regulations, only those who reach the service park after the last special stage will be scored.

WRC2

The ten best places were completed by the top of the WRC2 class. Here Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5) drove to victory. The two Škoda works drivers Pontus Tidemand and Esapekka Lappi (Škoda Fabia R5) finished 10th and 11th in the overall standings. Although Lappi was handicapped by a cold and fever this weekend, he managed to push Anders Grøndal (Ford Fiesta R5) from third place in the WRC2 classification in the last special stage . In the WRC2 drivers' world championship, Evans is leading by 32 points ahead of Armin Kremer , who did not start in Sweden, and Tidemand.
