The 13th Rally Mexico started on March 3rd and ended on March 6th, 2016. A total of 21 special stages were driven on gravel.

background

route

The service park for the rally was again this year near León , the fifth largest city in Mexico, around 400 kilometers northwest of Mexico City .

On Thursday evening three short special stages were driven at Guanajuato . These short special stages are particularly interesting and manageable for the numerous Mexican spectators who came this year as well. On Saturday and Sunday, the special stages were driven closer to León, which shortened the journeys to the service park. On Sunday the longest special stage with a length of 80 kilometers was on the program. This special stage was only driven once and was the longest special stage in the World Rally Championship since 1983 .

Driver and technology

The drivers have not driven a rally on gravel roads since the 2015 Rally Australia , they first had to break into the loose surface again. The highest point of the rally was at 2,737 meters above sea level. The engines lost 20 percent of their power in the thin air, plus high temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius. The drivers and the technology were particularly stressed under these conditions.

Teams

For financial reasons, the private team Abu Dhabi Total WRT decided not to start at the Rally Mexico 2016. Robert Kubica also did not compete with his own team in Mexico, also for financial reasons.

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, March 3)

After Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville won the first special stage, Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) had set the fastest time in the second and third special stages. He led the competition after the first day with 1.7 seconds ahead of Neuville.

Day 2 (Friday, March 4th)

Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) was able to start the special stages in eighth position because of his failures at the Monte Carlo Rally and the Sweden Rally . The competitors in front of him had cleared the ideal line. The decisive factor on Friday was the 54-kilometer El Chocolate special stage , where Latvala set the fastest time with a 22-second lead over teammate Sébastien Ogier , who, as the leader in the world championship, had to go first on the special stages. Ogier had to survive a moment of shock in the fourth special stage. A few cows were crossing the street immediately in front of him. With a lot of luck, the world champion avoided a collision with an animal.

Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) was in fourth place more than a minute behind Ogier. After driving errors in the morning, technical problems slowed him down in the afternoon.

Dani Sordo held third place overall , although the Hyundai i20 WRC caused some problems. The accelerator did not react properly when pressed and Sordo had to be careful not to overheat his brakes.

Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) had to give up his hope of a top spot in the first special stage of the day. About ten kilometers from the finish in El Chocolate , Neuville spun on a knoll and hit a large stone with his car, causing the left front suspension to break. Neuville could no longer continue his journey. Teammate Hayden Paddon , who was fifth overall on Friday night, sustained an unusual injury. Shortly after the start of special stage five, Paddon hit a wall and damaged a bike in the process. During the subsequent repairs, Paddon touched hot parts of the vehicle and suffered minor burns on his hand, which the team doctor treated during the lunch service.

“So far I am satisfied. The afternoon was good, but I was at the limit. It couldn't be better. "

3rd day (Saturday, March 5th)

Jari-Matti Latvala

Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) had nothing to oppose his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala on Saturday either. After 19 special stages, Latvala had a lead of over 1:30 minutes and he won a total of 10 special stages in the current competition.

Third place was more than two minutes ahead of pursuers Mads Østberg (Ford) and Dani Sordo (Hyundai). With good drives on Sunday, Sordo could secure third place on the podium for Hyundai in the third rally of the year. However, like on Friday, he did not get through the day without any problems. In the 13th special stage the fan on the radiator failed, causing the engine to overheat and lose power.

For Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), the Mexico Rally on Saturday finally turned into a debacle. After he had retired from the first special stage of the day on Friday and returned to the competition under the Rally 2 regulations , he had a serious accident on the twelfth special stage. To be on the safe side, Neuville was taken to a hospital for examination and no injuries were found.

4th day (Sunday, March 6th)

Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) made perfect use of his back position on the first few days and was the fastest on Friday and Saturday. Latvala only had to manage the reassuring lead over his team-mate Sébastien Ogier skillfully on the final day and after 21 special stages he was 1: 05.0 minutes ahead of the reigning world champion. With second place and three additional World Championship points from the power stage , Ogier is the real winner of the Rally Mexico, even if he missed his fourth win in a row. Since his immediate pursuer in the drivers' world championship, Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen), was out and Mads Østberg (Ford) and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) were classified behind him, Ogier extended his championship lead and after three of 14 rallies he already had 38 Points ahead of Østberg.

"I hit back, a fantastic feeling."

- Jari-Matti Latvala : motorsport-total.com

Dani Sordo had subsequently lost third place at the Rally Mexico. The Hyundai driver was given a two-minute time penalty for using one tire more than allowed during the four-day rally. Because of the penalty, Sordo dropped from third to fourth. Mads Østberg , who took Sordos third place, benefited from the penalty . After the time penalty, the two drivers only separated by 1.5 seconds.
