Gaertner comes from one of the most successful ski families in Germany. Her cousin Christl Cranz is considered one of the most successful runners of all time. Her cousin Rudolf Cranz also celebrated numerous national and international successes. Gaertner followed in the footsteps of her relatives early on and was promoted to the German national ski team at the age of 14. In 1938 she took part in the World Ski Championships in Engelberg, Switzerland. Their further sporting development was then interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. Gaertner was used as a nurse for the German Red Cross in the care of the wounded soldiers.

After the end of the war she concentrated on studying philosophy, natural history, geography and newspaper studies at the University of Freiburg , where she received her doctorate in 1949 on the subject of "Fruit and vegetable growing in the city of Freiburg and its surroundings" . In the same year she won her first German championship title in slalom in Oberstdorf . Six more followed in the next three years: in 1950 she became German champion in downhill and in combination, in 1951 and 1952 in slalom and in combination. In 1950 Gaertner won the giant slalom and on January 12, 1951, the downhill run of the SDS races in Grindelwald (on January 12, 3rd place in the combination).

After her active career, Gaertner embarked on a career as a reporter and journalist. She later appeared as the author of various travelogues about New Zealand and Australia . In 1962 she successfully ran for free voters in the election to the Freiburg municipal council and was a member of it until 1975. After a five-year break, she switched to the CDU and was re-elected. In 1989 she did not manage to be re-elected, but came back to the local council in 1991 as a successor . In 1994 she ended her political career.
