Achim Soltau

Achim Soltau (born April 13, 1938 - † January 29, 2016 ) was a German judge , correspondence chess player and chess official.

Soltau was the presiding judge at the Hamburg Regional Court . He had two daughters and a son. His father, Ernst Soltau , was a member of the Appointed Hamburg Citizenship and German master in sailing ( Olympic dinghy ).

In the German Federal Chess League , Soltau played a game for SK Johanneum Eppendorf in the 1981/82 season , in the 2nd Bundesliga he also played for SK Johanneum Eppendorf and SC Kreuzberg in the 1980s .

From 1988 to 1993 Soltau was President of the German Correspondence Chess Federation . Since 1990 he was international correspondence chess master and since 1992 he was grand master in correspondence chess .

At the correspondence chess Olympiad , Soltau won the gold medal with the German team as a team boss in 1999, followed by silver a year later. He took part several times in the finals of the World Correspondence Chess Championship , most recently at the 21st World Championships (2005-2008). His best placements were fourth at the 16th World Cup (1999-2004) and at the 18th World Cup (2003-2005). Since January 2008 he took part in the Hermann-Heemsoth -Memorial, the correspondence chess tournament with the highest number of players so far, and finished in 10th place.

In 2004 he was awarded the Bertl von Massow medal in silver. With 13 correspondence chess grandmaster norms, he holds an unofficial world record in correspondence chess.
