Stephan Busemann (born February 8, 1957 ) is a German computer scientist , grandmaster in correspondence chess and was President of the German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF) from January 1, 2017 to January 6, 2019 .

Life

Stephan Busemann was born in 1957 and studied computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Hamburg . He received his PhD in 1990. He has lived in Saarbrücken with his wife since 1990 and works at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence . In 2012 he was appointed honorary professor for computational linguistics at Saarland University.

Busemann was a member of the SK Johanneum Eppendorf , for which he competed in two Bundesliga 2 competitions in the 1984/85 season . In the 1986/87 season he was registered as a substitute for SC Kreuzberg in the 1st Bundesliga , but was not used.

He has been playing correspondence chess since he was 18 and in 1995 he achieved the title of Grand Master. At the 12th Correspondence Chess Olympiad (1998-2004), the 14th Correspondence Chess Olympiad (2002-2006) and the 17th Olympiad (2006-2011) he won the gold medal together with his teammates. Furthermore, in 2015 he won the Witold Bielecki Memorial of the Top Players together with David van der Hoeven .

Busemann has been President of the German Correspondence Chess Association (BdF) since January 1, 2017 , when he succeeded Uwe Staroske . On January 6, 2019, he resigned from his position. Until March 2019, he was still acting as an "acting president", since then managing director Uwe Bekemann has represented the correspondence chess federation.
