The O-dinghy ripped

The Olympic dinghy - O-dinghy for short ; Sign: a red circular ring, stylized with the letter "O" - was designed by Hellmut Stauch as a regatta boat for the 1936 Olympic Games . It is constructed as a one-man boat with cat rigging . The fuselage is built in round frame construction. Due to the solid construction and the very good sailing properties, there are still many old boats today.

The equipment of the O- dinghy and the materials used for it have been adapted to the current trend. The former wooden hull is now almost exclusively made of composite fiberglass . The deck is mostly made of mahogany for the sake of appearance. Not only the hull changed its material. So the O-dinghy got z. B. gradually a tree vang, forestay and shrouds , V2A - sword and an aluminum rudder blade. Initially made of wood, the rig (mast and boom) was later made of aluminum, which allowed much greater flexibility. The forestay and the shrouds were then even adjustable. The formerly rigid rig was transformed into a multi-adjustable instrument for regatta sailing. There is hardly a single-handed boat with such an adjustable sail.

The O-dinghy, which is no longer Olympic today, is numerically one of the largest national boat classes in Germany. The class association - the International Olympic Dinghy Union (IOU) - has around 500 members.

The O-dinghy is v. a. sailed in the countries of Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Germany. There are also a few O-dinghies in Brazil, Poland and other countries.
