Cat rigging by the laser

Cat - Rigg or cat-rigging refers to a type of rigging in sailing ships and sailing boats that is characterized by the absence of foresails.

Sailboats with cat rigging do not have staysails. They can be single-masted or multi-masted (cat-yawl, cat-ketch and cat-schooner), their main sails are different forms of bow sails .

Different types of sailboats with cat rigging

  • Cat boat: Cat boats have a mast positioned far forward on which the mainsail is guided. The classic catboat from America is characterized by a very large width of almost 50% of the boat's length, a flat cabin structure and a large rudder blade (barndoor rudder) at the stern. The sole type is common in Europe, as are various one-man dinghies ; typical representatives are the Olympic boat class Laser and the boat class Monarch .
  • Cat- Ketch : Two- masted sailing boat, the mizzen mast is often only slightly smaller than the main mast . Cat-ketches are common in North America, for example as sharpie.
  • Cat schooner: schooner with cat rigging, i.e. a two-master without a foresail .
  • Cat-Yawl: Yawl with cat-rigging.

The type of rigging should not be confused with the catamaran, which is also abbreviated to Kat .
