Born around 1964 in the city of Gurdaspur in the state of Punjab, Fateh Singh joined the Indian military at a young age and was a long member of the 15th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment . In 1995 he took part as a marksman at the first Commonwealth Shooting Championships in New Delhi and was able to convince there as a multiple medalist. Since this sport was just on the rise in India at that time, he was able to prove himself to be one of the best shooters in the country.

At the Games, he won gold in the "Big Bore Rifle Three Position" competition and silver in the "Big Rifle Prone Position" . Many of the now active or already inactive Indian sport shooters such as Suma Shirur , Anjali Bhagwat or Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore stated that they perceived Fateh Singh in a role model function. After retiring from the Dogra Regiment in 2009 with the rank of Subedar Major , he immediately joined the Defense Security Corps and was stationed in Pathankot on behalf of the latter for the last two years before his death .

Before that he was stationed at the Army War College , an institute for tactical training and research for the Indian Army , in Mhow , where he also appeared as a trainer. There he trained himself, like numerous other athletes, even in his early days as a marksman. On January 2, 2016, he served as a military officer in the terrorist attack carried out by the Islamist organization Jaish-e Mohammed on the Pathankot Air Force Station in 2016 near the Pakistani border. In the official fighting between the terrorists and the military, which lasted until January 5, he was one of 14 people (including six of the attackers) who were killed in this act of terrorism.
