The two or three sons of Carl Friedrich Leopold von Gerlach (1757-1813), who often appeared together in Prussia around the middle of the 19th century, are summarized under the brothers or brothers (of) Gerlach :

The youngest of the brothers, Otto von Gerlach (1801–1849), is also less likely to be referred to by this term. The Gerlach brothers often appeared together in their youth and student days, for example in the Deutsche Tischgesellschaft , and cultivated numerous mutual acquaintances with artists and scholars of their time, such as Friedrich Meier , the brothers Heinrich and Ferdinand Olivier or Clemens Brentano .

In later years, Leopold and Ernst Ludwig von Gerlach in particular formed an important team in the nascent conservative party of Prussia and when the Kreuzzeitung was founded . They associated with Otto von Bismarck or Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , For example as part of the " Kamarilla ". Leopold von Gerlach, as adjudant general to the king, enabled access to the court, while Ernst Ludwig was active as a publicist and conservative source of ideas.

The Gerlach archive at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg documents the life and political work of the Gerlach brothers.
