Camp del Ginèbre necropolis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neolithic necropolis Camp del Ginèbre is located in the Lac de Caramany near Caramany in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in France and dates from the early Chasséen (around 4500 BC).

The necropolis, excavated by Alain Vignaud in 1993 and 1994, is a few tens of meters from the old bed of the Agly River, a little above the Roussillon plain. It has been under the lake since the Caramany dam was dammed at the end of 1994.

A total of nine simple stone boxes were found on an area of around 500 m² . Three of them lie under round cairns with a diameter of about 7.0 to 11.0 m. They hid adult burials. The other six boxes contain the remains of children and young children. Some are in the middle of stone circles. According to Enric Carreras Vigorós and Josep Tarrus Galter, the boxes are of the same type as the Solsonès boxes in Arca de Calahons.
