Carl Friedrich Leopold von Gerlach

Carl Friedrich Leopold von Gerlach (born August 25, 1757 in Berlin ; † June 8, 1813 there ) was the Lord Mayor of Berlin from July 6, 1809 until his death .

Life

Leopold von Gerlach was born as the third son of the secret finance councilor Friedrich Wilhelm von Gerlach (1711–1780) and his wife Sophie, née. Coeper (1719-1759).

He was wealthy on the manors Ganzkow , Schötzow , Mechenthin and Rützow (co-owner of Rützow b) in the Fürstenthum district . In 1805 he sold the first three and acquired the Rohrbeck estate in the Königsberg Nm district. He appeared in public as the President of the Royal Prussian Kurmärkische War and Domain Chamber and later as the Secret Upper Finance Council (corresponds to the position of Finance Minister).

He was mayor at the time of the Napoleonic occupation of the city. According to the new city ordinance of November 19, 1808 and the subsequent election of the Berlin city council, Leopold von Gerlach was elected chairman of the city council on April 25, 1809 and, together with two other candidates, by the city council for the post of mayor on May 1, 1809 suggested. Von Gerlach hesitated to accept the post, but then consented in a letter to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. one who confirmed the election on May 8, 1809. The Friedrich Wilhelms University, today's Humboldt University in Berlin , was also founded during his term of office .

Probably the largest part of Leopold von Gerlach's estate, including above all correspondence within the family and official documents, is now in the Gerlach archive at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

He is buried in the cathedral cemetery II in Berlin-Mitte on the right wall in grave I-74/75. His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .

In April 1786 he married Agnes von Raumer (1761–1831), the eldest daughter of Leopold von Raumer (1726–1788), government director in Anhalt-Dessau , and his wife Anna Eleonore von Waldow. The couple had several children:

His second oldest son Leopold was a Prussian general and politician, his third son Ernst Ludwig became a judge and also a politician and journalist. Both were instrumental in the formation of the Prussian conservative party .

His older brother Ludwig Wilhelm August von Gerlach (* 1751; † 1809) became president of the court in Köslin in Western Pomerania.
