Arthur Werner (born April 15, 1877 in Berlin ; † July 27, 1967 in West Berlin ) was a German civil engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) And the first Lord Mayor of Greater Berlin after the end of World War II in Europe .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1898, Werner began studying law at the University of Berlin , but then moved to the Technical University of Charlottenburg to study civil engineering . There he became a member of the Hevellia Berlin fraternity in 1898 . After obtaining his diploma in 1907, he opened a private technical school. Arthur Werner received his doctorate in 1912 from the Technical University of Danzig as Dr.-Ing. After his service in the First World War , where he was seriously wounded in 1916, he continued his school operations. From January 1932 to November 1932 he was a member of the NSDAP .

In 1942 he had to give up teaching because he also taught Jews at his technical school.

Eight days after the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht , the Soviet city commandant Bersarin appointed Werner, who was not affiliated to the party, as Lord Mayor of Greater Berlin on May 17, 1945, succeeding NSDAP member Ludwig Steeg . The appointment was later confirmed by the Allied Command . After the first free elections in Berlin on October 20, 1946 , he had to hand over his office to the SPD politician Otto Ostrowski .

Arthur Werner is buried in the Lichterfelde Park Cemetery.

For the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, Walter Womacka painted a portrait of Arthur Werner based on a historical photo.
