from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2016 terror attack on Pathankot Air Force Station occurred on January 2, 2016 as part of the Kashmir conflict . Five fighters from the Islamist Jaish-e Mohammed attacked the Pathankot air base in the state of Punjab near the border with Pakistan. A 13-hour firefight ensued in which all attackers and seven defenders, including one civilian, were killed.

Place of the event

The Pathankot Air Force Base is located about 430 kilometers north of the Indian capital Delhi and serves, among other things, to monitor a road that connects the Indian-administered part of Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Historical classification

The Kashmir conflict between Pakistan and India has been smoldering here since 1947 after Muslim militants tried to force Kashmir to be linked to Pakistan.

The attack on Pathankot Air Force Station came a few days after Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan, Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif , negotiated mutual relations in Lahore.

procedure

In uniforms of the Indian army dressed, armed with assault rifles offenders on January 2, 2016 went at 3:30 am (22:00 GMT) with a stolen police vehicle to the base and directly studied their living rooms on. However, these were deserted.

In the further course the soldiers of the base began to fight off the attackers by opening fire. In the next few days, according to media reports, shots could be heard and helicopters could be seen in action over the base.

Under the name of Operation Dhangu , the Indian army began to move more troops to the base, which the attackers were eventually able to encircle and destroy.
