Helmut Hodel (born April 26, 1925 in Karlsruhe ; † February 29, 2016 ) was a German football functional . From 1964 to 1968 Hodel was 1st Chairman of the Karlsruher SC . Prior to that, he was active from 1953/54 to 1957/58 and 1962/63 and 1963/64 as chairman of the gaming committee at Karlsruhe Adenauerring. He made a significant contribution to winning the two DFB Cup successes in 1955 and 1956, as well as making it into the final of the 1956 German football championship . From 1958 to 1962 the A-license coach led the KSC-A-Jugend with players like Horst Wild , Rolf Kahn , Willi Dürrschnabel , Udo Glaser and Roland Weida to two South German championships in 1961 and 1962.

Early years leading up to the presidency

As a teenager, Hodel was a talented athlete and Baden youth champion in the long jump and the hundred meter run. Towards the end of the Second World War , he was wounded and taken prisoner by the French. After his escape, he returned to Karlsruhe in July 1945 and began studying business administration. Since his parents died within six months, he was no longer able to finance his studies and therefore began vocational training at the LVA in Karlsruhe . By the time he left in 1990, he was promoted to Chief Administrative Director.

He came to VfB Mühlburg in 1948 through the son of the then 1st chairman Felix Rittberger . He took on the role of youth leader and built up a successful youth department. At the 1952 general assembly he was elected chairman of the gaming committee. As a member of the board of directors, he was also involved in the merger negotiations with Phönix Karlsruhe and the city of Karlsruhe, which finally resulted in the second vote in Mühlburg on October 16, 1952, approving the new large club Karlsruher SC. Under Rittberger's successor, Heinz von der Heydt - Rittberger had died in June 1952 - Hodel was time-consuming involved in monitoring and signing newcomers. He was also involved in the engagements of Heinz Trenkel and Edmund Adamkiewicz from Hamburg for VfB Mühlburg, just as he brought Walter Bauis from Viernheim in 1953 and Wilhelm Dimmel from Leimen to KSC in 1954. Another good experience was with the blue-whites with his obligations to players like Bernhard Termath , Siegfried Geesmann , Heinz Ruppenstein , Werner Hesse , Willy Reitgaßl , Otto Geisert , Gerhard Kentschke and Klaus Zaczyk .

The most important thing for the players of this era, in addition to the footballing fortune of the club, was finding a good job. In the KSC book, Hodel named the then Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe Günther Klotz and Alex Möller as his “most energetic supporters” in this mission. The city of Karlsruhe (Rudi Fischer, Walter Bauis, Max Schwall), Badische Bank (Kurt Sommerlatt, Oswald Traub), Karlsruher Lebensversicherung (Heinz Ruppenstein), Siegfried Geesmann, Werner Hesse (LVA) and the Badenwerk (Bernhard Termath) provided after consultation of the Kontaktmannes Hodel, good jobs available for the newcomers.

Board of the Karlsruher SC

In the second year of the new Bundesliga , 1964/65, Hodel took over the 1st chairmanship at Karlsruher SC. During this time of realignment in top German football from the financially manageable contract footballer of the regional upper leagues to the licensed player of the single-track Bundesliga with a professional cut, the extremely successful maker of the Karlsruhe upper league time lost the necessary luck with the coaching as well as most player commitments. KSC played constantly for relegation from the beginning of the Bundesliga, after the fifth round, 1967/68 , he was relegated to the Regionalliga Süd. After relegation, Helmut Hodel ended his function as a member of Karlsruher SC.

In later years he made a name for himself as a coach in amateur football in Baden, particularly through his work at TSV Reichenbach, which he led from the 2nd Amateur League Middle Baden in 1979/80 to the Association League North Baden .

The KSC commemorated the longtime honorary member with an obituary notice on March 4, 2016 in the Badische Neuesten Nachrichten (BNN).
