The 2016 African Nations Cup was the fourth edition of the African Nations Cup . The tournament for Africa 's national soccer teams, organized by the African Football Association , was held in Rwanda from January 16 to February 7, 2016 and was held for the third time with 16 teams. Only players who play in the national championships of their home countries were eligible to play.

Decision criteria for the group stage

The winner of a game received three points; in the event of a tie, each team received one point. The table placement was primarily based on the higher number of points. In the event of a tie between two of the following criteria, in this order about the placement:

  1. Higher number of points in a direct comparison of the two teams.
  2. Better goal difference in all group matches.
  3. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches.
  4. Drawing of lots.

In the event of a tie between more than two teams, the following criteria decided on the placement in this order:

  1. Higher number of points in a direct comparison of the three or four teams.
  2. Better goal difference in direct comparison of the three or four teams.
  3. Higher number of goals scored in a direct comparison of the three or four teams.

If two teams are still tied according to these criteria, the following criteria will decide on the placement in this order:

  1. Higher number of points in a direct comparison of the two teams.
  2. Better goal difference in a direct comparison of the two teams.
  3. Higher number of goals scored in a direct comparison of the two teams.

If the two teams are still tied according to these criteria, the following criteria will decide on the placement in this order:

  1. Better goal difference in all group matches.
  2. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches.
  3. Drawing of lots.
