The qualification for the African Nations Cup 2016 took place between June and October 2015. 42 nations fought for the 15 starting places to be awarded at the 2016 African Nations Cup .
Just like in the final round, only players who were under contract in the respective domestic league were allowed to play in the qualification.
The African national football teams were divided into six zones. The “North” and “West A” zones were each given two starting places at the 2016 African Nations Cup , the other four zones each receiving three starting places, with Rwanda as the host already claiming one place in the central-east zone.
As the team of the host country, the Rwandan national football team automatically qualified for the finals. FIFA classified the games as "friendlies", which had an impact on the calculation of the FIFA world rankings , but still counted these games as A international matches, even though only players from the domestic leagues were eligible to play.
