Ítalo Estupiñán (born January 1, 1952 in Esmeraldas ; † March 1, 2016 ), also known by the nicknames El Gato Salvaje (in Mexico ) and La Yerbita (in Ecuador ), was an Ecuadorian and naturalized Mexican football player in the position of striker .
Life
Estupiñán received his first professional contract in 1970 with the Macará . In 1972 he switched to CD El Nacional , with which he won the championship in 1973 and played twice in the Copa Libertadores .
In 1974 he moved to the Mexican Primera División , where he won the championship straight away in his first season 1974/75 with Deportivo Toluca and was named the best player of the season with the Premio Citlalli de Oro . In addition, Estupiñán scored on June 26, 1975 with a header that the championship decisive goal to the 1-0 win against Club León .
After three years with the Diablos Rojos , he moved to Club America in 1977 , with whom he won the final of the Copa Interamericana against the Boca Juniors in April 1978 . In the sixth attempt, this was the first triumph for a team from the CONCACAF division against a representative of CONMEBOL .
In the 1982/83 season he won another league title with Puebla FC and ended his active career after this success before he decided again in 1986 to play for one year for CS Emelec .
Estupiñán made 14 appearances for the Ecuadorian national team , in which he scored four goals.
After finishing his playing career, Estupiñán returned to Mexico and took on Mexican citizenship. He was often in one way or another for his former club Toluca, for which he also worked as a football coordinator. He also worked as a supervisor for soccer schools on behalf of the government of the state of Mexico .
He died of a heart attack at the age of 64.
