Alfred Civilion Fones (* 1869 in Bridgeport , Connecticut , † March 15, 1938 ) was an American dentist . He is considered to be a pioneer in the professionalization of dental hygiene , which began in 1906. Fones established the term "dental hygienist" and in 1913 founded the first school for dental hygiene. Fone's father was also a practicing dentist. Fones graduated from the New York College of Dentistry in 1890.

Since 1906 he has been teaching his medical assistant and cousin Irene M. Newman in professional teeth cleaning. That is why she is considered the world's first female dental hygienist. Fones created special teaching aids from the teeth extracted in his practice by adding them to a modeling compound and using plaster of paris to simulate tartar and discoloration on the neck of each tooth. Newman began performing oral prophylaxis in public in 1907.

Newman's dental guide seemed to be helping the trained children, so she started a preventive dental treatment program for high school students in Bridgeport. In 1913, Fones founded a school for dental hygienists and convinced the Bridgeport Board of Education to fund the program.

Although the dental hygienists were trained to work in doctor's offices, Fones' primary goal was to get them to work in schools. The first training class consisted of 34 women, including teachers, nurses and wives of doctors.

Lecturers included the deans of the Pennsylvania and Harvard Dental Schools , seven professors from Yale, and two from Colombia .

His school reopened in 1949, eleven years after his death on March 15, 1938.

The Fones School of Dental Hygiene is now based at the University of Bridgeport .
