Walter McGowan

Walter McGowan (* 13. October 1942 in Hamilton , Scotland ; † 15. February 2016 ) was a British boxer in the flyweight .

Professional career

In 1961, McGowan began his professional career. After national titles, which he won against Jackie Brown in May 1963 and against George Thomas, who competed as "Killer Solomon", in September of that year, he boxed on April 1964 against Salvatore Burruni for the European title of his weight class, the flyweight. He lost the fight fought in Rome . After a tie in a titleweight contest for the European bantamweight champion against Tommasi Galli in December 1965, McGowan succeeded in gaining the universal as well as the Ring Magazine world title of his original flyweight class against Burruni in a renewed confrontation on June 14, 1966; the referee decision was unanimous on points. McGowan received the title of Commonwealth and British Champion on September 6th of that year against Alan Rudkin ; However, he lost that of the world champion in December against the Thai Chartchai Chionoi . Another attempt in September 1967 in the rematch against Chionoi was lost. The previous holder, Alan Rudkin, also got the two British titles back after the defeat in May 1968.

In 1969 he ended his career after 32 wins with seven losses.
