Manuel Velázquez Villaverde (born January 24, 1943 in Madrid , † January 15, 2016 in Fuengirola ) was a Spanish football player . His position was the central midfield.

Career

Manuel Velázquez began his career in Real Madrid's youth before joining Rayo Vallecano at the age of 19 . After a total of three years on loan with the Madrilenians and FC Málaga , he finally returned to Real Madrid under coach Miguel Muñoz . Stars like Alfredo Di Stéfano or Ferenc Puskás had passed their zenith at that time and slowly had to be replaced. To this end, young footballers like Amancio , Pirri , Manuel Sanchís or Ignacio Zoco were hired , as well as talented self-made players like Ramón Grosso or Manuel Velázquez were built into the team themselves. After numerous national successes, this team, made up only of Spaniards and nicknamed "el Madrid yé-yé" , won the European Cup in the 1965/66 season . Velázquez himself made a name for himself as a creative central midfielder, organizing the capitals' game until he retired from Real Madrid in 1977, at the age of 34, due to an injury. In the 1978 season he played for Toronto Metros-Croatia in the North American Soccer League before ending his career.
